Family Matters: Waterparks, Pools, and More

Friday, July 01, 2011

With the weather warming up, the water is looking better and better. Have fun in Rhode Island's many pools and waterparks, and be safe while doing it!

Kido Tip 1. Water safety

Many of us will be participating in water-related activities this summer. Now is a good time to review water safety rules with your spouse, caregiver, and children. Here are some helpful tips from the Red Cross:

With children, constant supervision is key. Keep them in your line of sight at all times when enjoying the pool. Other steps you can take include:
• Securing the pool with appropriate barriers. Many children who drown in home pools were out of sight for less than five minutes and in the care of one or both parents at the time.
• Never leave a young child unattended near water, and do not trust a child’s life to another child; teach children to always ask permission to go near water.
• Avoid distractions when supervising children around water.
• If a child is missing, check the water first. Seconds count in preventing death or disability.

Kido tip 2. Cool off at a pool or waterpark

Providence has six outdoor pools and nine water play parks free and open to the public. The pools are at six Providence recreation center sites and water play parks are in neighborhood parks throughout the city.  Open from noon-5pm, Monday-Saturday in July and August.

To find a facility convenient to your home, visit the Providence Parks + Recreation site for details.

Kido Tip 3. Mark your calendar for Kidoinfo Providence Story Time

We love local, storytelling and exploring downtown. Families bring a blanket and enjoy different weekly storytellers under the trees near the fountain in Burnside Park in downtown Providence. Kidoinfo will feature at least one story each Thursday morning (July - August) from a local Rhode Island author or illustrator. Stay after Storytime and take part in special activities, games, walking tours and more! Different schedule each week. Check Kidoinfo for schedule.
