Fit For Life: Winning Starts – Today

Today’s the worst you will be.
I was talking to the football team I work with before practice yesterday, and I asked them if they were watching the Olympics. Many said that they were, so I told the whole team to watch. I recommended they watch not because I expect them to get excited about sports like swimming, but I want them to see the level of competition on display. I told them that every contest is won by fractions of a second, and before practicing in the blistering heat, I stressed the fact that champions never take a day off. These Olympians train all year long at a super high intensity. Training and practice is all these athletes do. They sacrifice everything to be the best, and there is no other way to reach the pinnacle of success without hard work, discipline, and all out dedication to making improvements every day. I also told them that these people are all at such a high level that when someone comes in second, it becomes a matter of execution. Although there is always a second, and third place finisher, it usually isn’t because they weren’t prepared, it’s because they made an error during the competition.
How do you make improvements when you lose something by 1/10th of a second? At that level improvements are much tougher, because you are usually at the top of your game, and you have already grinded out hours of training and practice. So what do you do to improve? Train more? Improve your technique? I don’t know. When you are at that level, improvements are smaller, and tougher to come by because there is less room to get better.
Well, fortunately for my team, and for most of us, making improvements is much easier. It is much easier, because we all have a lot of room to improve. I told my players on day one that this is the worst we will be, and that at every practice something has to improve. I said that every year I coached, our team was never championship caliber - in August. I told them that the only reason teams make it to the top is that they improve on a daily basis. Every drill, every practice session, you need to keep getting better, stronger, faster, and more mentally focused. It’s the only way to win.
I try to instill this into all my clients at Providence Fit Body Boot Camp. Although being competitive isn’t what we are all about, we still all need to make constant improvements in our everyday lives. I tell my clients that each healthy meal you eat, and every workout you attend will make an improvement in your health and fitness. At the end of every week, any pound or percent body fat lost is an improvement, and if you are trying to do small tasks better in your everyday life, success will follow. But you need to want to improve and you need to recognize that you need to get better. The #1 component that hinders improvement is not recognizing that you need it.
Success starts with mindset.
Like everything else, success starts with mindset. First you need to program your mind to succeed. Negative thoughts will always hold you back. You need to have an “I can do” attitude and be willing to put in the time and effort in order to succeed. Then you need to start creating better habits. Eat a healthy breakfast, drink more water, avoid sugar, and get to the gym and exercise regularly. These are a few small good habits to add to your daily tasks. After these become a habit, you work on creating more little habits that will take you to your goals. Constantly try to improve, and you can guarantee you will achieve what you set out to do.
After you develop these good habits, you need to be committed to make it a lifestyle. You can’t improve on one thing and stop. You need to commit to constantly trying to improve your life on a daily basis. Consistently trying to get better at something every day will make you great at whatever it is you want to achieve.
From health to business, until we reach that Olympic status we need to wake up each day with one goal in mind- Trying to make improvements in our everyday lives. I suggest you think about a way you want to get better and start by putting a few of these simple steps into action. You may not reach the podium anytime soon, but you will acquire a lot of self-satisfaction along the way!!
