From Broadway to Worcester: Mary Poppins Debuts at Hanover

Tuesday, September 25, 2012

You can catch the acclaimed Broadway show this week at the Hanover Theatre

One of Broadway's top shows debuts in Worcester tonight as the Hanover Theatre hosts "Mary Poppins" the Musical.

The Tony Award-winning musical is one of the biggest stage successes in recent memory. Based on the on the 1964 Disney film of the same name, "Mary Poppins" tells the tale of a magical nanny that comes to work for an emotionally out of touch family in turn-of-the-century London.

The show features rousing musical numbers, surprisingly stunning effects, and scene designs that earned the show a 2007 Tony Award. Still, don't think for one second that if you've seen the movie you know everything that is going to happen. The Broadway production, currently being performed on three different continents, is not a direct adaptation of the film, and incorporates some magical scenes from the Mary Poppins book series that you may have never heard of.

The Hanover Theatre will host eight performances of "Mary Poppins" over six nights this week, beginning tonight (September 25th) and continuing through Sunday the 30th. Saturday and Sunday will each feature both afternoon and evening performances.

But Mary Poppins is just the beginning of a hit-filled 2012-2013 season at the Hanover, which will feature classics such as "West Side Story" and "Les Miserables," along with new hits like "Rain" and "American Idiot."

“I’m really proud of the season we’re announcing - our audience is growing so quickly that we’re able to present bigger and better shows, and this season represents another big step up for us," Hanover Theatre Executive Director Troy Siebels said. "The shows are all Broadway blockbusters, kicking off with Mary Poppins in September for a full week of performances, which is a first for us.  We’re also adding a Sunday evening subscription, so we’ve got some great seats for new subscribers as well as those renewing.”
