Getting Out: Cinco de Mayo Celebrations in Central Mass

Thursday, May 02, 2013

Mariachi Bands are one of the most famous staples of Mexican culture.

No matter where you go, Cinco de Mayo is one of the best party days of the year. The holiday, held in honor the unlikely defeat of superior French forces by the Mexican Army at the Battle of Puebla in 1862, is celebrated in many areas of America and Mexico alike. Plenty of establishments in the Central Mass area honor this festive day with fun food and alcohol filled celebrations. Here are just a few.

Ceres Bistro
363 Plantation Street, Worcester
Ceres Bistro will be having its annual Cinco de Mayo Patio Party on Sunday from 2 pm-8pm. There will be festive food and drink and a featured DJ. The party is sponsored by Patron and Corona so there will surely be plenty of beer and tequila on the patio. Stop by for a chance to win an overnight trip to Boston, Providence, or New York City, and other great prizes.

Mezcal Tequila Cantina
166 Shrewsbury Street, Worcester; 20 Central Street, Leominster
Mezcal Cantina's Cinco de Mayo celebration lasts all weekend! Stop by May 3rd-5th to enjoy a special Cinco de Mayo menu, margarita pitchers, tequila & beer promos, festive entertainment, and of course their famous guacamole.

The Alamo
55 Medway Road, Milford
The Alamo in Milford has a band called "The Cabana Boys" that will be playing in the afternoon starting at 4. They will also have "The Corona Girls" and "The Cuervo Girls" giving away hats, T-shirts, and much more. It looks like it'll be a beautiful day, so they will also have a "Hopping Patio" according to owner Fred Sullivan!

Ixtapa Restaurant and Cantina
308 Mass Avenue, Lunenburg
On the more “general” side of things, the bar will be open late Friday and Saturday, and on Sunday the entire restaurant (for all 3 locations- Lunenburg, Woburn and Lexington) will be open until midnight. They will also be having a special menu for food and drinks on Cinco de Mayo and will have T-shirts for sale and/or to give out to customers. There will also be live music.

Mexicali Grill
700 Main Street, Holden; 117 Main Street, Spencer
Mexicali Grill is having special food and drink menus on Cinco de Mayo and are open late (Until midnight). In addition, at the Mexicali location in Holden, from 12-2pm, the radio station Mix 104.1 will be present, with street teams playing music and giving out prizes to the customers.

Sol of Mexico
538 Pleasant Street, Worcester
Sol of Mexico will be featuring numerous specials during Cinco de Mayo weekend. Check out the Horchata and Jamaica (hibiscuses) drinks, and munch on some corn on the cob or Pozole (Traditional Mexican Soup), starting Friday into Saturday.
