Hanover Theatre Welcomes Award-Winning Broadway Shows

Monday, April 02, 2012

Mary Poppins has quickly become a Broadway favorite.

The Hanover Theatre will welcome six Award-Winning Broadway plays as a part of its fifth subscription season.

Disney Sensation

The shows coming to Worcester range from the classic West Side Story, to the new rock and roll hit American Idiot. The fun begins in September when Mary Poppins comes to town. Based on the classic Disney film, Mary Poppins is in its sixth year on Broadway, and has won five Tony Awards over its brief run.

“I’m really proud of the season we’re announcing,” Hanover Theatre Executive Director Troy Siebels said. “Our audience is growing so quickly that we’re able to present bigger and better shows, and this season represents another big step up for us. The shows are all Broadway blockbusters, kicking off with Mary Poppins in September for a full week of performances, which is a first for us.”

Broadway Classics

Two Broadway classics follow the new Disney hit. West Side Story and Les Miserables are two of the most decorated plays in Broadway history. Since its first run back in 1958 West Side Story has enjoyed three revivals, two on Broadway, and won five Tony Awards and a Theatre World Award for Best Musical. The story is a 1950’s spin on Romeo and Juliet, which pits two rival gangs of different ethnic backgrounds against each other.

Les Miserables won the Tony and Drama Desk Award for Best Musical when it debuted on Broadway in 1987. Since then, the play has had over 10,000 performances worldwide, and is currently the second longest running show in Broadway history. With one of the most highly regarded scores in theatre history, and a plot centered around revolutionaries in 19th century France, Les Miserables is certainly a must-see.

Rock and Roll Hits and a New Comedy

If something a little more upbeat is your style, the theatre will also welcome rock and roll hits Rain and American Idiot. Rain is a Beatles cover act that has enjoyed a successful run on Broadway, as well as touring around the world. American Idiot is a musical by popular rock band Green Day, based on their album of the same name.

Based on the album of the same name, American Idiot is an exciting rock musical.

The show won three Tony Awards during its initial run in 2010, and won a Grammy in 2011 for the Best Musical Show Album.

Finally, the theatre welcomes the new hit musical comedy, The Addams Family. Since debuting in 2010, The Addams Family has won multiple awards and become a favorite for its outlandish set designs and quirky comedy. The theatre will offer tickets to these distinguished shows on a per-show basis, but will also be making special arrangements for their subscription members, even if they have just signed up.

“We’re also adding a Sunday evening subscription,” Siebels said. “So we’ve got some great seats for new subscribers as well as those renewing.”
