La Excelencia Brings Hot Salsa to FirstWorks
Wednesday, October 20, 2010
This is a dance party you will not want to miss.
When La Excelencia hits the stage at Lupo's Heartbreak Hotel as part of FirstWorks this Sunday, they bring a hot dozen salsa players who merge hectic percussion, blaring and impassioned singers all swung by driving bongos, congas, and timbales. Throw in some brassy trombones and trumpets, and you've got music that will drag you to the dance floor. And never let go.
Urban music you can dance to
But with La Excelencia, you get even more. Unlike traditional salsa orchestras that showcase slick, photogenic vocalists who supersede the band behind them, this New York City-based group considers itself a true collaborative. Further, while traditional salsa music celebrates (and even fetishizes) overwrought songs of love and passion, these musicians write and sing of immigration, urban strife and poverty. LIke some of the best hip-hop and rap, this salsa brings its current urban setting to vibrant, hard-hitting life.
