Tuesday, May 29, 2012
The 2010 study, which included Mormons and Unitarian/Universalists who self-identified as Christians, found that the highest concentration of Christians were primarily in the upper Midwest and southern states.
In ninth place, Massachusetts was the lone New England state in the top ten, with 55,023 of every 100,000 Massachusetts residents saying that they belong to the Christian faith.
Utah had the highest percentage of Christians, with 78,438 per 100,000 residents. North Dakota was second with 66,950 Christians per 100,000, followed by Alabama with 62,467 Christians per 100,000.
Christians in Worcester County
In Worcester County, 402,034 residents reported adherence to one of the 518 Christian affiliated churches, which represented 50.3 percent of the county’s population, a smaller percentage than the state average of 55 percent.
In the ASARB study, Rhode Island was not far off of Massachusetts’ figures, with 53,576 per 100,000 persons claiming Christianity for their religion.
Maine had the lowest percentage of Christian respondents, with 27,098 Christians per 100,000 and Vermont reported 32,954 Christians per 100,000.
Conflicts with Gallup Poll
Massachusetts' place on the top ten for Christians conflicts with a Gallup Poll that was released in March, which found that only 28 percent of Bay Staters considered religion an important part of their lives and attended religious services weekly.
