Memorial Day Events in Central Massachusetts 2014

While this long weekend brings the promise of summer fun, it is also an important pause in the American consciousness when we consider the men and women who have died while in military service.

In Central Mass this weekend, the following parades, observances, and annual celebrations are open to the public.

Worcester Worship Service and Water Ceremony

Sunday, May 25

All Faiths Cemetery, at 10 a.m. on 9 Island Road, a worship service will be held at the pavilion.

A Water Ceremony at 2 p.m. at Elm Park will honor the people who have no traditional grave. Registration will be at 1:15 p.m. at Elm and Highland streets.

Sutton Parade

Monday, May 26

Members of the Dudley-Gendron American Legion Post, SAL Detachment Unit 414 and SAL Detachment Unit 414 will visit cemeteries and memorial sites starting with West Sutton Cemetery at 7 a.m.

The parade will begin at 11:15 a.m. at Sutton Common near Town Hall and proceed to the Simonian Early Learning Center for an 11:45 a.m. program with a flag-raising at noon.

Holden Parade

Monday, May 26, 11 a.m.

The parade will begin near the Senior Center, 1130 Main St., and end at the Veterans Monument on Route 31.

Shrewsbury Parade

Monday, May 26, 9:30 a.m.

The parade will begin from the Richard D. Carney Municipal Office Building, 100 Maple Ave., and stop at the Soldier's Statue in front of the police station on Maple Avenue, the War Memorial at the Town Center (Route 140 and Main Street) and at the Veterans' lots at Mountain View Cemetery.

Northborough Parade

Monday, May 26, noon

The Memorial Day parade and ceremonies will begin at the Civil War Monument at Main and Monroe streets with ceremonies at various monuments along the parade route.

West Boylston 5K Run/Walk and Parade

Saturday, May 24

A 5K Run/Walk will be held at 10 a.m., rain or shine, at Major Edwards Elementary School. A Memorial Day weekend family-style festival with live music, fireworks, and bonfire will be held from 7 to 10:30 p.m. at Goodale Park, Crescent Street. The rain date is Sunday.

Monday, May 26

Graves will be decorated at 8:30 a.m. at St. Luke's Cemetery and 9:15 a.m. at High Plains Cemetery.

A parade will assemble at Duncan M. Gillies parking lot at 10:30 a.m. and proceed to Mt. Vernon Cemetery.

Spencer Parade

Monday, May 26, 8:30 a.m.

The lineup for the parade will begin at the American Legion, 175 Main St., with the parade beginning at 9 a.m. and ending at Prouty Park with Memorial Day services.

Sturbridge Parade

Monday, May 26, 9:30 a.m.

The parade will form at the old fire station at Routes 20 and 148, stop for a ceremony at the American Legion Monument at 9:50 a.m.; proceed to St. Anne's Cemetery for services at 10 a.m., then reassemble at 10:45 a.m. at the Public Safety Complex. At 10:55 a.m., the parade will proceed to North Cemetery for a service at 11:10 a.m. The parade will conclude at 11:30 a.m. at Town Hall with a service for the Old Cemetery decoration of monuments, replacement of the POW flag, the national anthem and flag-raising. An open house will follow at the American Legion Hall. Bus transportation will be available, before, during and after.

Ashburnham Veteran Services and Parade

Sunday, May 25, 10 a.m.

Veterans services will be held at at Community Church, 84 Main St.

Monday, May 26, 8:45 a.m.

Parade participants will assemble at on Meeting House Hill Common and march to the Old and New cemeteries for services, then to Fairbanks Hall for a program. A chicken barbecue will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. at the American Legion, 132 Williams Road. The cost is $9. For reservations or takeout orders, call (978) 827-9926.

Fitchburg White Cross Ceremony, Wreaths Laying, and Parade

Sunday, May 25, 6 p.m.

A White Cross ceremony will be held at in Monument Park.

Monday, May 26, 7: 20 a.m., 10 a.m.

Wreaths will be placed at cemeteries and monuments citywide beginning at 7:20 a.m.

A parade will begin at 10 a.m. at North Street and proceed up Main Street to the Upper Common gazebo, where a program will be held.
