Moms Can-Do’s: Carousel Adventures + More

Tuesday, September 24, 2013

This week take your child to the Looff Carousel, a Rhode Island staple.

Moms of little ones—from toddlers to elementary schoolers—looking for fun things to do during the week? Creative spots for last-minute outings? Fun events especially for little ones? We'll bring you our 5 favorites in the region every Tuesday, and they're all within an hour's drive of home. Check out this week's fall fun.

Ride!

Carousels have long been regarded as a staple of childhood. Whether it’s the beautiful animals; the rings; or waving to mom and dad as it loops around, there is just something special about a good old fashioned carousel ride. The Looff Carousel at Crescent Park in Riverside has been captivating kids and kids at heart since 1895. According to the City of East Providence’s website, this ride has traveled the distance around the Earth 33 times since it opened! Take the kids there this weekend and become a part of a Rhode Island tradition, for only $1.00 per ride. Every Saturday night, there is a classic car “cruise night” as well—so dad will want to be in on this one too. The Looff Carousel at Crescent Park, 700 Bullocks Point Avenue, Riverside, RI. For more information, go here or call 401-435-7518.

Art!

Admit it. Your kids love the Worcester Art Museum. There’s nothing wrong with that, but why not try something new? The less known Fitchburg Art Museum is a great option! The Museum is super family friendly and has awesome exhibits going on right now. If it’s a nice day when you head out, make sure to check out their outdoor exhibit, which consists of changing wind-driven kinetic sculptures that the kids will love! Fitchburg Art Museum, 25 Merriam Parkway, Fitchburg, MA. For more info, go to http://www.fitchburgartmuseum.org/ or call 978-345-4207.

Explore!

Davis Farmland in Sterling has its perks no matter what time of year it is, but it is especially appealing in fall. Why? The mega-maze of course! If you’re in Central MA, this is the perfect spot for a mommy and me excursion. The maze is great for elementary school kids, but might not be the best idea for littler ones. If you have pre-schoolers or kindergarteners on your hands, check out the petting zoo where the kids can see all of their favorite animals, and when you’re finished head over to U-Pick apples or pumpkins to wrap up the day. Davis Farmland, 145 Redstone Hill Road, Sterling, MA. For more info, visit http://www.davisfarmland.com or call 978-422-MOOO.

Learn!

Kids are curious; it’s a fact of life. Why not let them embrace their curiosity at the Providence Children’s Museum? Everything about this place is hands on! Not to worry, there are exhibits that cater to every age group. Make sure to visit the website to check out cool upcoming events! Younger kids will adore the “Cardboard Challenge” during the first weekend in October, while grade schoolers will love the “Super Structures” exhibit on October 14! The Providence Children’s Museum, 100 South Street, Providence, RI. For more info, call 401-273-5437 or go to http://www.childrenmuseum.org/.
