Moms Can-Do’s: Fishing Holes + End of Summer Fun
Tuesday, August 27, 2013
Check out this week's mid-summer fun.
Fishing!
There's nothing more old fashioned than dropping a line in a quiet pond or lake, and even little ones can play a role in a late-summer fishing expedition. For a great list of lakes, streams and ponds and what's stocked with fish, check out Massachusetts Wildlife's listing, here.
Hungry Caterpillar!
Bring your budding Picasso into the world of art! Eric Carle's picture books, like The Very Hungry Caterpillar and The Grouchy Ladybug, have inspired generations of children, and now you can explore works by Carle and other illustrators. At the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art you'll find galleries, an interactive art studio, a reading library, live events and more. 125 West Bay Road, Amherst, MA. 413-658-1100. www.carlemuseum.org
Fair!
More old-fashioned fun is to be had in Western Massachusetts, where as summer begins to turn towards fall, you’ll find the Three County Fair, one of the longest running fairs in the country. Three County Fair traces its roots all the way back to 1818, and 195 years later, the fair is still going strong. True to its history, the Three County Fair still highlights agriculture, education and science. Three County Fair, Northampton, MA: August 30 – September 2. www.threecountyfair.com
Ship!
At Fall River's Battleship Cove, the past is at your fingertips. The kids will love scampering around the world's largest and most diverse collection of historic naval ships, imagining thrilling missions aboard ships like the mighty USS Massachusetts. And the whole family will love spending quality time together on an unforgettable journey of discovery. Whether you're a casual visitor, tourist, history buff, a student, teacher or scout leader, this world-class maritime heritage museum has something for everyone. 5 Water Street, Fall River, MA. 800-533-3139. www.battleshipcove.org
Farm!
Historic farms delight every age, and this beautiful 300-acre working farm, overlooking Rhode Island's Narragansett Bay, is a rare example of one of the original plantation farms of the Colonial era. Kids can ramble fields, roam stone walls, explore a family cemetery and "hike" trails on the property. 2325 Boston Neck Road, North Kingstown, RI. 401-295-1030. www.historicnewengland.org.
