NEW: 84 Mass Communities Receive “Tree City USA” Awards
Friday, June 01, 2012
The ceremony took place at the Ocean Explorium and awarded towns that are committed to urban forestry. The awards are sponsored by the National Arbor Day Foundation and require that a town establish a department devoted to tree care, spend at least $2 per capita per year on urban forestry, enforce laws protecting trees and host an Arbor Day celebration.
"DCR is proud of the cities and towns across the Commonwealth that have devoted so many resources to planting and caring for their trees," DCR Commissioner Edward M. Lambert, the presenter of the awards, said. "It is a special year to honor arborists statewide following the damage done to trees diring the unusual weather events of 2011."
The eight Central Massachusetts communities that received Tree City USA Awards are:
Charlton, Grafton, Leominster, Sturbridge, Sutton, Warren, Westborough and Worcester.
