video: NEW: Hasbro Game Battleship Getting Its Own Movie

Wednesday, July 27, 2011

One of Hasbro's best-loved games will hit the big screens in a dramatic fashion in the spring of 2012. Universal has poured a reported $200 million in a Battleship movie and released the long-awaited trailer today.

The special effects appear to have potential, if the trailer is any evidence. There's an alien battleship flinging pegs at the metal siding of the US Navy Boat. Cool.

This could be Hasbro's next Transformers. The transformation of the company's popular toy into a high-grossing movie franchise is well underway: the first film (2007) has grossed $709 million worldwide. Revenge of the Fallen (2009) has grossed $836 million, and Dark of the Moon has grossed $914 million, according to Box Office Mojo.

Battleship will star Liam Neeson, Taylor Kitsch, and Rihanna's breakout acting performance who still looks hot despite competing with a stylized boardgame-videogame.

Want to watch the trailer? Here it is.
