NEW: New England Not “Manly” According to COMBOS Study
Tuesday, June 12, 2012
The study measures America's 50 largest cities on "manly factors" such as home improvement stores, steak houses and motorcycles per capita, and New England was not well represented. Providence, RI took the top spot in New England, coming in at #24. Boston, the only other city in New England in the top-50 for population, check in at an abysmal 47th.
Providence has continued a steady climb, up three spots from last year, and nine spots since 2010, while Boston has been on the decline, dropping another two spots this year after dropping 14 spots last year. Bostonians will also be sad to know that they could not even beat their unmanly rivals from New York City, who checked in at #39.
The Manliest Cities
So where are the manliest cities? By in large, down South. Oklahoma City took the top spot, and seven of the top 10 came from below the Mason-Dixon line. Despite not being southern, Ohio is well represented on the list, with both Toledo and Cleveland landing in the top-10, and Cincinnati and Dayton finishing in the top-20.
Girly Towns
Where are the least manly cities in the country? Well, the only three cities to finish below Boston were all located in the Golden State. Yes, it appears that California, despite having one of the manliest former governors ever, is incredibly girly. San Diego was graded as the least manly city in America, and Oakland and San Francisco didn't fare much better, ranking #48 and #49 respectively.
