NEW: Rhode Island Named 7th Most ‘Hipster’ State in America
Wednesday, May 11, 2011
The results were compiled based on how many times each state had searched online for hipster-related terms such as “hipster look,” “hipster music,” and “hipster fashion.”
Define 'hipster'
For the uninitiated, “hipster” refers to a person, usually age 20-30, who tries to dress and act against conventions. Often this includes wearing vintage (or vintage style) clothing, such as flannel shirts, listening to underground music, and reading lesser-known works of literature. Many Brown University students fall under the banner of the “hipster.”
Although the hipster movement has traditionally been associated with Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood in New York, the number one most hipster state was surprisingly found to be Minnesota, with New York in second place. Although Minnesota is far from the Northeast, where most of the hipsters are concentrated, it has a large local food culture, a lot of live theater and music, and other progressive attributes that make it a hipster haven.
The only other New England state was Massachusetts, which ranked number four. Rhode Island was ranked higher than Washington, California, and Pennsylvania. The full article “The Hipster States of America” with the top ten list can be found here.
