Worcester “Give a Book” Drive in Need of Your Help
Saturday, May 12, 2012
Last year’s book drive raised over 25,000 books for underprivileged children in Worcester, prompting members of the “Worcester: The City that Reads” committee to set the bar even higher this year.
Unfortunately, the book drive is behind schedule, and is in jeopardy of not meeting its goal of 26,000 books raised for the year. The drive ends May 18th, leaving only a week to make up lost ground. John Monfredo, co-founder of “Worcester: The City that Reads,” is feeling the sense of urgency, and hopes that residents will rise to the occasion.
“We are in the last days of our drive and need everyone to check their homes for children’s books that are too young for the family, or that have been read several times,” Monfredo said. “Thus far we are running behind in our quest to reach our goal, so would you please help us out by looking around your house for children’s books to donate.”
Each year, the books are distributed to children in June for summer reading. Books are also given to social agencies to help build elementary school libraries, health centers and summer school projects. Monfredo believes that students without access to books are at a severe disadvantage.
“There is very clear evidence that children from high-poverty families have very little access to books at home, at school and in their communities,” Monfredo said. “Studies also show when children has access to interesting and comprehensive reading material, they read. And finally, when children read, the improve all apsects of literacy, including vocabulary, grammar, spelling, reading and writing ability.”
