Newport Beach Makes T+L Top List

Saturday, August 21, 2010

There's a reason Rhode Island is called the Ocean State. As native Rhode Islanders, we are privy to the waterfront beauty that surrounds our land - the beaches, the cliffs, the sunsets - but it's important to know that our shorelines were just recognized on a national level. In its August issue, Travel + Leisure named our very own Newport Beach as one of America's Most Beautiful Coastal Views.

In the article, Newport's shoreline is described as the place where America's most affluent families built their "summer cottages" (or grand mansions) in the 19th century because of the pristine ocean views. "Not much has changed since then," reads the article. "[The mansions overlook] sweeps of ocean so immense it's easy to forget that Rhode Island is our smallest state."

Newport Beach landed among esteemed company in the piece, such as Big Sur in California, the Everglades National Park in Florida, the Tongass National Forest in Alaska, and the Kekaha Kai State Beach in Hawaii.
