NEW: Holy Cross Students Start Recycling Program “Trash or Treasure”
Thursday, May 10, 2012
Eco-Action, a completely student-run environmental group at the school is sponsoring “Trash or Treasure,” a movement that encourages students to leave unwanted items like lamps, office supplies, items of clothing and books in designated areas of the residence halls.
The event begins tomorrow, and will run through next Wednesday, May 16th. Instead of ending up in the trash, all the unwanted belongings will be collected and redistributed to Worcester-area organizations. Senior Vivian Daley, co-chair of Eco-Action, says the event aims, not only to encourage students to recycle, but also to self-assess some of their daily habits.
“This year, in addition to collecting donations, we would really like to educate the student body about reducing their waste,” Daley said. “We hope that people take a look at what they’re donating and begin to evaluate if they are making good decisions when purchasing items.”
The event began four years ago as an effort to reduce the amount of waste produced when students move out of residence halls. The program also opened to seniors living off-campus last year, and was so successful that Eco-Action has now arranged for a Salvation Army trailer to be on campus after Commencement for students to donate items.
