Pet Safety Tips for Memorial Day Weekend Travel

Memorial Day Weekend is nearly hear and travel plans are being made and you may be wondering what to do with pets while you are away or maybe you are bringing them with you.

With that in mind, Camp Bow Wow, a fast growing pet care franchise, has offered the following tips.

Pet Safety Tips

Flying with your pet: If you are going to take your pet on an airplane, it is important to determine whether your pet will need a crate or a carrier. Larger dogs will fly in a crate in the cargo, and smaller dogs that fit into a carrier can fly with you in the cabin. Make sure you find out the requirements for your dog prior to booking your flight.
Familiarize your pet with its crate or carrier: Pets like familiarity. If you plan on keeping your pet inside a carrier or crate while traveling, make purchases at least a month before travel to allow your pet ample time to get comfortable with the new environment. Place him or her in the carrier and provide treats. Gradually lengthen the time your pet is in the crate or carrier until your pet seems at ease in its new space.
Car Safety: It is important that we always think about the dog's safety while in your car. If you want it to sit on the seat, get your pup a dog seatbelt. It allows your dog to move around, but provides restraint in the case of an accident. If you have an SUV, you can buy a gate that keeps it from jumping from the back to the front.
Feed your pet no less than five or six hours before traveling: It is very easy for your dog or cat to become sick during travel. Providing time for food to digest lessens the chances of your pet becoming ill.
Make your pet feel at home: Use familiar food, bowls, blankets, toys and other items from your home to create a sense of comfort for your pet while on vacation.
Find a pet-friendly hotel: And if you've got plans during the day, since most pet-friendly hotels will not allow pets to be left in the room alone, consider taking your dog to a nearby doggie day care facility.

Earl is a love bug and we do mean bug! He loves to be around people and will let you know if he is not receiving the attention he demands! He will meow and meow his little heart out until you scratch his chin or give him a treat. He knows his name and will talk with you if you call him. He isnt big on being picked up, but rub his belly and scratch his chin and he'll love you forever.

Evie is an eight year old diluted tortie tabby mix who is a cuddly, sweet lady. She was surrendered because she was not getting along with the other cat in her home. When you pet Evie, she quickly turns to mush and even likes to lick your hand and show you her belly! Evie must go to a home where she will be an only cat.

Austin

Austin is a feisty 6-year-old, 25 pound terrier mix who love to snuggle. He likes to play ball and take apart stuffed animals. He is house-trained, crate-trained, polite on the leash, and knows how to sit. He gets along with non-reactive dogs and cats, but because he is very cautious about how he is touched, he is not a good fit for households with children. Austin will be a loyal, loving companion for someone who can give him some training and structure.

Elroy

Meet Elroy! He's a 7 pound, 2 year old Chestnut colored Chihuahua. Elroy loves to cuddle, and walks nicely on leash. He also knows how to sit and takes treats nicely. We think one of his best quality is his happy smile. Elroy is good with most small dogs, although he can be a little pushy at times, he thinks he's bigger! He has behaved beautifully in his foster home with the other dogs. He is very playful, he loves to sleep on giant dog beds, play with toys, and chase his foster mom. He takes a lot of naps and is generally very quiet

Pumba is an adorable 7 year old Shep-a-Doodle (Shepard and Poodle mix). He's a lot like Pumba from The Lion King; he has an incredible underbite and had long hair on his back with short hair on the sides! One difference is our Pumba is a perfect 35lbs!

Frankie

Frankie is a special boy in search of a special home. Frankie joined Broken Tail Rescue in late December. His former owners had puppy fever. When they found this adorable boy with that Teddy Bear face on Craigslist, they could not resist. Shortly after they brought Frankie home he began to have seizures. The family was not emotionally or financially prepared to care for a dog with medical needs.
