Pine Ridge to Host 4th Annual Memorial Golf Tournament for American Cancer Society

Monday, July 20, 2015

On August 1, Pine Ridge Country Club in Oxford will be hosting the 4th Annual Hall-Hughes Memorial Golf Tournament to benefit the American Cancer Society.

The tournament, played in memory of Deborah Hall and Sean Hughes, is a collaborative fundraising effort by the Hall and Hughes families to raise money towards cancer research in the names of Deborah and Sean.

"It's important to me to have this tournament in order to help raise money that goes towards finding a cure for this horrible disease because I've experienced first hand how hard it is to deal with losing a parent to it," said Deborah's son Kevin Hall.

In May 2005, at the age of only 48, Deborah died from lung cancer only 12 days after being diagnosed.

"It means everything to me to honor my mom with this tournament," said Hall. "Before she passed away, I told her I would do everything I possibly could to make her proud and by helping to raise awareness for cancer research with this tournament, I feel that I am fulfilling a part of that goal."

Sean Hughes died of liver cancer in April 2011 at the age of 52. Sean battled for five months to try and beat the disease before passing away.

"This tournament is away to keep my dad's name alive and donate to an amazing cause," said Adam Hughes, Sean's oldest son. "Cancer affects so many people, and if we can do our part to raise money towards eliminating this horrible disease, especially in my dad's name, then I know he would be proud."

Sean's youngest son, Joe, told GoLocalWorcester, "It was important to start an event in memory of my father and what better way than a golf tournament since he always took my brother and I golfing when we were younger. Now in its fourth year, it's only getting bigger and raising money for cancer research with all his family and friends helping. There's nothing better."

Over the past three years, the Hall-Hughes tournament has raised nearly $20,000 for the American Cancer Society. This year, they hope to exceed last year's donations of $8,000.

Here are some tournament details:

  • $100 per player, $400 per team.
  • 12:00 p.m. registration, 1:00 p.m. shotgun start.
  • 18 holes of golf with cart.
