Public Art Unveiled on Hope Street
Wednesday, December 01, 2010
Four massive steel sculptures created by local artist Donald Gerola were officially unveiled in a ceremony marking the major public art installation in one of the city's vibrant commercial districts.
The heftily whimsical pieces are situated at the Rochambeau Public Library, Seven Stars Bakery, Citizens Bank and the Festival Ballet. "Sculptor Donald Gerola is a prolific artistic visionary working right in our back yard," said Asher Schofield, organizer of the new public art display and owner of Frog & Toad, a popular gift retailer in the neighborhood. "Bringing his work to Hope Street serves to illuminate the vibrant culture of arts and creativity that is alive in our city."
"Placing art in our public places inspires our children, boosts our local economy and gives residents added pride and investment in their community," Schofield said. "This project is particularly exciting as it was conceived of and realized by the citizens of our neighborhood in a unique partnership with the artist himself."
