Thursday, May 02, 2013
Five women whose outstanding professional accomplishments have made life better for their community, especially women and girls, will receive the YWCA’s prestigious Katharine F. Erskine Award during the 20th annual Tribute to Women on May 6 at Mechanics Hall.
The recipients and categories in which they are being honored are: Kathleen Ivanowski, Arts & Culture; Deborah Penta, Business & Law; Mable Millner, Education; Barbara Nealon, Health, Science & Technology; and Meridith Wesby, Social Service & Government.
The Katharine F. Erskine Awards are named in honor of a woman who was an advocate for women for 80 years. She was a member of the YWCA as a teenager in the early 1890s and served as president of the YWCA twice: in 1930 and again in 1960 during the building campaign to construct the present facility at One Salem Square. Recipients of this award show a commitment to the YWCA’s and Ms. Erskine’s mission - to empower women and girls and eliminate racism.
