South High School Senior Brielle Stovall was recently accepted to and performed earlier this month with the All-Eastern Treble Chorus - made up of select singers from all over the East Coast- at the Vets Memorial Auditorium in Providence, Rhode Island.

“It was amazing. I’ve been to so many of those choral conferences. It’s just great to work with really high-caliber performers from all over the East Coast,” said Stovall. “It was cool to work on more advanced things.”

Stovall was the only singer accepted to this chorus this year from Central Massachusetts. The chorus is only comprised every two years through the National Association for Music Educators - making it quite an accomplishment for Stovall.

Stovall, a top-notch is the Drum Major for the South High Community Band and she plays nine instruments including piano, flute, alto saxophone, guitar, drums, piccolo, and bassoon, among others - many of which have been self taught.

“In my free time I try to play sports and stay active - other than that, I focus on music," said Stovall.

Stovall's hard work paid off at South. Being a top-notch student at South High's Goddard School, Stovall has been accepted into the voice performance degree program at the prestigious Carnegie Mellon University in Pennsylvania where she will attend this fall after receiving a tremendous financial aid package.

“I think that Carnegie Mellon is a perfect place for her,” said Jane Shivick, Stovall's private voice teacher. “Not only do they share an excellent voice program , but they also have excellent academics and connections to the outside world and the entertainment and the music business.”

“I think Brielle’s greatest attribute is her yearning to best educate herself as best as she can  and to learn as much as she can about whatever it is that she’s studying. When she is studying voice, she is 150% into it,” said Shivick.

Stovall was accepted into every college she applied to - Carnegie Mellon, Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, Ithaca School of Music, Hartt School of Music, the Voice program at UCONN, and UMass Lowell. Brielle was also accepted to Clark University in Worcester on a full scholarship and recently received a sizeable scholarship from Opera Worcester in support of her talent and pursuit of a voice degree.

Stovall credits Shivick with helping guide her through the college application process and determining what schools of music she should apply to.

“It’s one of the most difficult things to do in the world - for an 18-year-old,” said Stovall. “I wouldn’t even know where to start if not for Jane. She has been a really bright flashlight in a really dark tunnel for me.”

Following college, Stovall hopes to become a choral director. “It would be a shame for someone that has her abilities to not teach the students that we have in the United States that are in such need for excellent music teachers and music programs," said Shivick. "She’s a perfect candidate. She’s already teaching some private students. She has the natural ablitliy for it.”
