Katie Boyd from Taunton

In June, pageant hopefuls from across the Commonwealth will flock to Worcester’s Hanover Theatre to compete for the title of Miss Massachusetts, the qualifying pageant for Miss America. While contestants are using the next few months to prepare for the big night, one former Miss MA contestant is making sure pageant girls and non-pageant girls are swimsuit ready.

Katie Boyd from Taunton, MA owns the Miss Fit Club in Wellesley, MA, an all-female fitness center. After retiring from the pageant system at the ripe age of 24, Boyd began training pageant contestants and others throughout New England. Many of her clients have won major titles thanks in part to their top 10 figures, gaining Boyd a reputation as a fitness pageant guru. (The current Miss MA USA, Natalie Pietrzak, is one of Boyd’s clients). However, it’s not only her high intensity workouts that have gotten her noticed. It’s also her boisterous personality and Massachusetts slang that landed the personal trainer her own reality tv-show on the Style Network called Wicked Fit, which debuted in the Fall. Here, Boyd has some real advice for no-nonsense Worcesterites who are serious about getting wicked fit!

1) Katie, you train pageant contestants, but you’ve stated on your show that not every girl in America was meant to be a size zero. What’s your advice for those setting goals that may be unrealistic?

When entering any nutritional goal always ask yourself why you’re setting the goals and who you’re setting them for. If the goals you’re setting aren't for yourself then you need re-think why you’re setting them because at the end of the day you will never be happy with the end results if it isn't something that you want. If possible hire a trained professional to help you set realistic goals that are attainable.

2) What do you see as the biggest mistake people make when attempting to improve their diets?

The number one mistake I see people doing to their body is starving themselves. People think that they are going to lose more weight by doing that but that's false. When their body goes into starvation mode it will hold on to any food that they have in their body and wreak havoc on their metabolism causing them to gain more weight when they do eat. The second mistake that I see is people following fad diets (i.e Atkins, Cabbage Diet). These diets aren't healthy; that's why people should follow a nutrition plan that's right for them that they can make into a way of eating to obtain a healthy lifestyle.

3) Is there a healthy way to loose weight fast?

The healthy way to loose weight is by eating small healthy lean protein meals 5 times a day (i.e. fish, chicken, green leaf veggies.) Tribe Hummus is an excellent healthy snack to eat with veggies. Exercise 5 times a week if possible. High intensity interval training is the best way to train.

4) The fitness industry is filled with products for people to purchase to help them get fit. From videos, to self-help books, to blenders and stability balls, do you have an opinion on any one product that can do the trick?

People think that you need items like these to help you through your fitness goals but no gym ball or video is necessary. You can even use soup cans as weights when starting out. Truly all you need is strong determination and a solid routine. My motto is Fail to Plan-Plan to Fail!

5) What do you recommend for people who want to get fit but “just don’t have the time”?

80% of the game is your Diet. The best thing to do is plan your meals for the week so you can control what you put in your mouth. The other 20% of the game is your exercise. There are several things you can incorporate in your day to help you get your blood flowing evenly in your body, by parking the car further in a parking lot so you walk a longer distance, taking the stairs instead of the elevator and even doing simples exercises at work. At the end of the day these are all cumulative things that you can do to help you reach your goals!
