The Best Colleges for Surfing

As the calendar turns to summertime, the sun emerging from the clouds means one thing for beach bums everywhere: the bird is the word, and it's time to surf.

Despite some recent inhospitable behavior by local beach dwellers, most notably from the "Bay Boys" of Lunada Bay in Los Angeles County, there's no better time for surfers of any skill level to take to the water. Proximity to the best waves can become a top priority for folks this time of year, including college students looking to celebrate the end of the school year.

With this in mind, StartClass found the best colleges for surfers. We considered schools with proximity to nearby surf spots and their popularity among surfers, and took inspiration from Surfer Magazine and Surfline. We settled on 21 schools ideal for surfing, and then ranked them based on their Smart Rating scores, which are based on financial affordability, career readiness, admissions selectivity, expert opinion and academic excellence. The maximum score a college can have is 100.

Unsurprisingly, 13 of the 21 schools are located in California, including three colleges in the northern part of the state — UC Santa Cruz, the University of San Francisco and Humboldt State University. Rhode Island is the only other state with more than one college on the list.
