“The Festival” Brings Beers from Around the World to Worcester
Friday, June 22, 2012
"The Festival" will be held in Mechanics Hall in three separate sessions this weekend, and will feature some of the oldest style beers from around the world. Organizer Will Shelton of The Shelton Brothers hopes the festival will give people a chance to try many new styles of beer in an intimate setting.
"We're limiting the attendance to 1,000 people for each session," Shelton said. "We want to keep it small and intimate so you don't spend half your time waiting in line. Also, you now have the chance to go up and talk to the person who actually makes the beer and learn about it from them."
One brew on display will be the Sahti style, which is one of the oldest styles of beer still being brewed today. Sahti is a farmhouse beer style indigenous to Finland, and is brewed much the same way today as it was some 500 years ago.
"We hope that this festival will give people a chance to just experience the broad scope of beers," Shelton said. "There are going to be some beers at this festival that a lot of people won't even recognize as beer."
This is the first of what Shelton hopes are many beer festivals. He says that co-sponsors The Shelton Brothers and 12 Percent Imports look to make this an annual event, and that Worcester was a logical first spot due to its central location. Whether or not the festival comes back, that remains to be seen, as the idea of taking it on the road is being entertained.
"The Festival" will feature beers from across Europe, Japan, New Zealand, and beyond. Several American breweries will also be on display. For more information and to purchase tickets, click here.
