Robin Kall, GoLocalProv Book Columnist
Welcome to Top Shelf Tuesday where I’ll be highlighting books on their actual pub day, Tuesdays.
Altamont: The Rolling Stones, the Hells Angels, and the Inside Story of Rock’s Darkest Day is out today! Award-winning, veteran journalist Joel Selvin brings his trademark research, combines it with his love of music and the result is an incredible story about what was supposed to be “Woodstock on the West Coast” and was anything but. If you want to learn details that have never before been revealed and get the full scope of an idea that went from bad to worse between the location, the drugs and a particular brand of Hells Angels don’t miss this book.
I had the best time chatting with Joel and you can hear it on the Reading With Robin podcast available on iTunes.
The photos included in this book add to the page-turning storytelling. A young Mick Jagger appears transfixed on the stage where fights are breaking out all around him. The Stones needed an ending to the documentary, Gimme Shelter, which was being filmed on location. They sure did get one. It was the perfect storm of idealism, arrogance, concert logistics and of course, those drugs.
