From White City on Lake Quinsigamond to drive-ins to back to school shopping at Denholms, let’s look back on our favorite summer activities of the past.

George's Coney Island
George's Coney Island has served the tastiest hot dogs in Worcester since 1918.
Since its founding, it has remained at its original location on 158 Southbridge Street.
Although open year-round, a hot dog from Coney Island was a delicious summer treat.

White City on Lake Quinsigamond
A beloved must do of the summer was visiting White City in Shrewsbury on Lake Quinsigamond.
Founded in 1905, this amusement park was open for 55 seasons.
Attractions of the park included midway, a fun house, roller-skating rink, a penny arcade, concession stands, rides, sideshow acts, and a roller coaster.
The White City Plaza shopping center was built on the land after the park closed.

Girl Scout Camp Bonnie Brae
Many Girl Scouts of Central Massachusetts spent their summers at Camp Bonnie Brae in East Otis.
Camp Bonnie Brae is the longest, most continuously-run Girl Scout camp in the United States.
The camp will celebrate its 95th Anniversary on Saturday, August 2, 2014.

Whalom Park
Whalom Park , an amusement park located on Lake Whalom in Lunenburg, Massachusetts, was founded in 1893 by the Fitchburg & Leominster Street Railway.
At the time of its closing in 2000, it was the 13th oldest amusement park in the United States.
One of the park's most talked about ride was the "Flyer Comet" wooden roller coaster.

Drive-ins
Although many are now closed, a popular pastime in Central Massachusetts was going to the drive-in.
The Edgemere Drive-In located in Shrewsbury, MA, pictured on the right, was one of the best in the area.
This drive-in had the capacity for up to 1,000 cars.
After serving residents of Central Mass since 1955, the Edgemere Drive-In finally closed in September 2001.

Picnic at Bancroft Tower
On a beautiful summer day, families in Worcester picnicked on the grounds of Bancroft Tower.
Before the entrance to the tower was padlocked, children wasted whole afternoons exploring its secret rooms and dark crevices.

Back to School Shopping at Denholms
When August rolled around, you might have made a trip to Denholms in downtown Worcester to look sharp for your first day of school, if you were allowed to pick out what you wanted, that is.
