Pua kumbu are magnificent, intricately dyed, hand-loomed cotton ikat textiles once woven in profusion in longhouses in Malaysia’s Sarawak and in nearby Kalimantan, Indonesia. These ceremonial blankets were once religious objects par excellence for the Iban and the related Dayak women who wove them. Pua kumbu and the closely connected kain kebat ceremonial skirts were designed to be extraordinarily beautiful to attract the attention of the gods, to invite them to longhouse rituals, called gawai festivals.

Visit Connecticut's Glass House
