Whitinsville Students Learn Statistics While Helping the Community

WCC Students delivering donated food items to the Northbridge Food Pantry

To help support the Northbridge Food Pantry, this winter, students at Whitinsville Christian School were challenged to collect 800 food items.

Each day for two weeks, the students brought in cans and boxes of food, while the fifth graders checked the expiration dates and gathered data. In math class, the fifth grade students used this data to review mean, median, mode, range, and box and whisker plots. They then graphed the data daily to show how close they were to meeting their goal.

At the end of the two weeks, each class had more than exceeded their goal. The 5A class loaded up 1004 items of food and delivered them to the Northbridge Food Pantry.

Volunteers at the food pantry explained how the food pantry operates and how many people it serves. Then the students got busy stocking the shelves. The shelves were quite full when they left, and the students were blessed to be able to serve those in need.

Related Slideshow: The Most and Least Charitable Communities in Central MA

Below are the most—and least—charitable towns in Central Massachusetts. Towns were ranked by how much of local median discretionary income was donated to a charitable cause. The data is taken from the Chronicle for Philanthropy, using IRS records on charitable giving as reported on individual tax returns in 2008, the latest available year.

For each listed town, the total contributions are provided, along with the median contribution, the median discretionary income, and the percent donated. A state and national ranking is also included. State rankings are based on the percent of income donated, while national rankings are based on total contributions.

Note: No data was available for the towns of Tolland, Phillipstown, and Templeton.
