WOOphoric Broadway Preview Party at The Hanover

Wednesday, April 18, 2012

The Hanover Theatre will be bringing together the city’s cultural institutions as it opens its doors to theatre buffs and novices alike for a WOOphoric party on Thursday that previews the 2012-2013 Broadway Series.

Lisa Condit, Marketing Director for the Hanover, said that more than 1000 people are expected to attend the party, which will be hosted by Joyce Kulhawik.

Preview Party is New This Year

“We’ve completely revamped how we announce the shows – we used to announce the shows at the preview party, and it was a small event for subscribers and members of the press,” Condit said. “This year we’ve opened it up to everyone and we’ve partnered with the Central Massachusetts Convention and Visitors Bureau, Worcester Cultural Coalition, Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce and the WOO Card.”

In addition to video previews of the upcoming series, there will be food and drink samples from area restaurants and a cash bar. The party, which will run from 5 – 7 pm, is free and open to the public, but advance reservations are required. To reserve tickets, email the marketing department.

Condit said that the subscribers are very loyal to the theatre, and that the preview party is an excellent way to showcase all of arts, entertainment, cultural and dining venues of the city.

Patrons who purchase a subscription to the Broadway series before Friday will also receive benefits and discounts from 40 area museums, restaurants, venues and services, including the Worcester Art Museum, Tower Hill Botanical Garden, Ceres Bistro and the Niche Restaurant Group.

The 2012-2013 Broadway Series shows feature Mary Poppins, West Side Story, Les Miserables, American Idiot, Rain and The Addams Family.

Party attendees will also be entered into a raffle for front row seats for the Sunday evening show of the Broadway series.

Experience the New Worcester

With a theme of “Experience the New Worcester,” party sponsors will be raffling off eight other prize packages with a total value of more than $4000. With themes like “Kick Back and Relax,” “Cultural Connoisseurs,” “Hip in the City,” and “Traditional to Contemporary” the packages include dining and overnight stays, museum and concert admissions and limo services.

“You must be present to win,” Condit said.

Kulhawik, an Emmy-award winning Arts & Entertainment Critic, who hosted the Hanover’s Grand Opening in 2008, said she was looking forward to coming back to the Hanover.

“I was floored by the majesty and glamour of the Hanover,” Kulhawik said. “Thursday’s event is going to be an Art and Culture Festival that I would like to see replicated everywhere in the state – Newburyport, the Cape and in Boston.

“Everything is linked – the restaurants, the businesses, the visual arts and the entertainment. They’re pulling people from everywhere – this same template needs to be used elsewhere.

“We need to tell the world how culturally rich we are here in Massachusetts – we’re continually overlooked. My vision is to market our state to people from England, Ireland and all over the world,” she said.

Kulhawik said that she did not think the Hanover’s Broadway series would have any impact on the Boston theatre scene.

“There’s no need for it to,” she said. “There’s enough here to attract many more people.”

Hanover Theatre volunteer Bob Frankel said he comes to the Hanover from Newton.

"I first read about it when my son was at Clark University, and I was looking for a birthday present for him,” Frankel said. “Bill Cosby came, and he loved it.

Frankel said that while he is not a subscriber to the Broadway series and still attend the theatre in Boston, he is very loyal to the Hanover.

“I’ve brought my friends out to the Hanover," he said.  “They have great people; they are making a good effort to do good things for the city of Worcester, which the Boston theatre scene doesn’t really do. And there’s something to be said for an intimate setting.”
