Worcester Art Museum to Host Hassan Hajjaj: My Rock Stars Exhibition this Fall
Thursday, July 23, 2015
The exhibition, Hassan Hajjaj: My Rock Stars, features video, photographs and furniture design by Hajjaj showcasing the artist's hybird of multiple art forms.
"We look forward to experiencing how Hassan Hajjaj will infuse the bold energy of his aesthetic into our museum,” said Jon L. Seydl, director of curatorial affairs and curator of European Art at the Worcester Art Museum. “His references to the global marketplace resonate deeply with Worcester’s legacy as an international manufacturing hub. This connection, along with the universal appeal of his work, makes the Worcester Art Museum an ideal setting to view the exhibition in context of our global collection and unique history.”
Musicians and singers featured in Hajjaj's portrait photographs come to life in his 2012 video entitled My Rock Stars Experimental, Volume 1. Hajjaj designes costumes for the subjects in the film that combine traditional African fabrics and global luxury brands.
The exhibition will on view at WAM until March 6, 2016.
Hajjaj’s work is in private and public collections worldwide, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art (LACMA), the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the Institut des Cultures d’Islam, Paris, and Kamel Lazaar Foundation in Tunisia. Hassan Hajjaj: My Rock Stars was organized by the Newark Museum. The exhibition is curated by Christa Clarke, Senior Curator, Arts of Global Africa, and organized in Worcester by Jon L. Seydl.
