Worcester Public Library Hosts Harlem Renaissance Night
Tuesday, March 12, 2013
To really capture the atmosphere of the 1920s, costumes are highly encouraged for everyone. Sponsored by the Friends of the Worcester Public Library and in partnership with WPI, this lively event is completely free and open to the public.
In support of the Big Read’s book of the year—Zora Neale Hurston’s “Their Eyes Were Watching God”—the “Harlem Renaissance Night” is just one of many activities being held this month at the Worcester Public Library.
“The Harlem Renaissance Night was designed using the book more as a point of departure and inspiration,” says Elizabeth Giangrande, Worcester Public Library’s new Communications Specialist.
“We are really excited about this after-hours event,” says Giangrande, adding, “and we look forward to all of the ambiance!”
Other free events sparked by Hurston’s book include a book discussion for adults this Saturday, March 16th, and another discussion specifically for teens on March 27th.
In addition, the Friends Film Series is hosting a special screening of “Their Eyes Were Watching God” this Wednesday at 6 p.m.
The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest, designed to revitalize the role of literature in American culture and to encourage citizens to read for pleasure and enlightenment. This program provides citizens with the opportunity to read and discuss a single book within their communities.
“To date, more than 1,000 grants have been awarded to communities in the U.S. to host Big Reads since the program's 2007 national launch,” Giangrande says.
