Worcester State University students are set to team with Worcester Public School Bridge Program students to perform “Animal Jam,” which is the WSU students’ final class performance of the year. The performance will be held on Thursday, Dec. 12 at noon at the Fuller Theater, 2nd floor of the Shaughnessy Administration Building, located at Worcester State University.
The recital features students from WSU’s “Theatre for Young Children” course, as well as Worcester Public School students in the 18- to 22-year-old bridge program, which aids public school special education students in making the transition to the work world.
Background
It all started with Sara Penniman, a Worcester State Visual and Performing Arts major and student of American Sign Language (ASL) at College of the Holy Cross. Penniman saw an opportunity to act upon her love of theatre and her passion for people of differing abilities, and took full advantage of it.
Penniman brought together Worcester State VPA Chair Adam Zahler with Judy Freedman-Fask, her former ASL teacher who now works as the transition rehabilitation specialist for Worcester Public Schools. Together with Worcester State’s Lisa Kramer, who teaches a course called “Theatre for Young Children,” they revised Kramer’s course so it now addresses how to include people of differing abilities in theater.
“Animal Jam is kind of a Madagascar meets Magic School Bus story, with a little lesson about diversity, working together, and friendship thrown in. We tapped into the things that most spoke to the individuals involved, which means you will see a mix of puppets, movement, music, dance, and pure silliness," Kramer, Ph.D., an Adjunct Professor of Theatre at Worcester State University, told GoLocal.
Piloted this semester, the Worcester State students and Worcester Public Schools transition students are learning to work together to communicate and create opportunities to perform.
Each year, the students in the Theatre for Young Audiences class may or may not provide a final performance open to the public.
