Launched by Gov. Deval Patrick, Project 351 unites young leaders from across Massachusetts for community service events and leadership development.
Worcester students Jannette Eimmy Nshimirimana and Nathalia Rios will join Governor Deval Patrick and other 8th grade students from across the Commonwealth at the State House on Saturday, January 18th as part of the fourth annual celebration of Project 351, which is a statewide initiative that encourages young people to get involved in community service.
Eighth grade Ambassadors representing every city and town in Massachusetts were nominated and chosen by his or her school for their exemplary ethic of service and demonstration of Project 351 values of humility, compassion, kindness, and generosity of spirit.
Local Ambassadors
Nshimirimana, who attends Sullivan Middle School, and Rios, who is a student at Forest Grove Middle School, will join over 350 eight graders—many of which hail from Central Massachusetts.
In addition to representatives from Worcester, other local ambassadors include Christopher Keyes (Auburn Middle School, Auburn), Sam Pendergast (Tahanto Middle/High School, Berlin), Joshua Pelland (Florence Sawyer School, Bolton), Marie Curiel (Clinton Middle School, Clinton), Essence Perry (Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School, Fitchburg), Jessica Guertin (Grafton Middle School, Grafton), Arielle Sciar (The Bromfield School, Harvard), Benjamin Nigrosh (Hopkinton Middle School, Hopkinton), Meaghan Campbell (Oak Middle School, Shrewsbury), and Catherine O’Donnell (Quaboag Regional Middle/High School, West Brookfield).
Worcester is the only city in Central Massachusetts to have two representatives.
A message from the Governor
“I welcome Project 351 Ambassadors from Worcester and across the Commonwealth to unite in the spirit of service,” said Governor Patrick. “Our young people have unlimited potential to create positive change across our Commonwealth, our nation and our world. Project 351 recognizes that while providing a wonderful opportunity to inspire, challenge and motivate our next generation of leaders to give back and make a significant impact in our community.”
A unique honor
A Project 351 Ambassador is an 8th grade student selected by his or her school for their exemplary ethic of service and demonstration of Project 351 values of humility, compassion, kindness, and generosity of spirit. One Ambassador is selected for each town in Massachusetts; larger cities may receive multiple nominations due to population size.
By serving with other 8th graders from every corner of the State, Ambassadors have the opportunity to recognize and appreciate the diversity of the Commonwealth and create a network of youth leaders to share ideas and inspiration for service. Ambassadors serve for one year but have the opportunity to continue to participate in Project 351 events as Alumni. Alumni are invited to attend the organization's Leadership Reunion every summer.
A full-day of activities
Governor Patrick, Honorary Chair, will lead and participates in the full day of enrichment and service. Following a morning celebration of the Class of 2014 and the legacy of Dr. King at Faneuil Hall, the Governor and Ambassadors will engage in transformative community service with partners across Boston including, the Pine Street Inn, Greater Boston Food Bank, Mason Elementary School, Cradles to Crayons, Orchard Gardens Boys & Girls Club, Dudley Street Neighborhood Charter School, and the Vine Street Community Center. There are three highlights of the day led by the Governor: Morning Town Meeting and Celebration of Dr. King at Faneuil Hall, afternoon of service, and closing forum and commitment to serve at the State House.
Project 351
Project 351 was convened as a one-day event by Governor Patrick for his 2011 Inauguration. More than 400 eighth graders representing every city and town in the Commonwealth united to serve, develop leadership skills, and discuss issues critical to young people and their communities. By day’s end, the Ambassadors had impacted the lives of more than 8,000 citizens, gained confidence and capabilities, forged friendships with peers from diverse backgrounds, and committed to build the ethic of service in their communities. The day’s success and unique focus on statewide unity compelled the formation of Project 351 as an independent non-profit.
