slides: 10 Labor Day Weekend Trips Within An Hour Of Central Massachusetts
Friday, August 30, 2013
It’s hard to believe Labor Day Weekend is upon us in Central Massachusetts. For many, this weekend signifies the end of the lazy days of summer. This weekend, 34.1 million Americans will take a trip of 50 miles or more, a 4.2 percent increase from the 32.7 million travelers last year, according to AAA and HIS. Eighty-five percent of those travelers are expected to travel by automobile.
With so much here in Massachusetts, it is nearly impossible to not find a trip worth making. Check out our list of 10 great Labor Day Weekend trips and mark them on your calendars!
For 125 years, the Spencer Fair has been drawing crowds from near and far. Their secret? Plain old fashioned fun. Starting Thursday and running through Labor Day, the fair has something for everyone. From oxen pulls, to pumpkin contests, to rock concerts and more, this one is a sure bet only minutes from home. Be sure to pick up some kettle corn as well, it’s the best around.

Take the family on a day trip to Central Massachusetts’ flagship mountain. Spend the day hiking or biking the mountain, or if you have little ones just drive to the top for a picnic lunch on the summit. Take in the scenic views in the Central Massachusetts countryside, and on the clearest of days even see the Boston skyline. Once the adventure comes to an end, head down to the bottom to enjoy a great lineup of Labor Day activities, including a gear sale for the upcoming skiing and snowboarding season, a barbecue, skyrides, face painting and more.
Wachusett Mountain, 499 Mountain Road in Princeton
Admission and parking is free, however fees apply to activities.
Though the Blandford Fair is a bit farther from home than our other trips, this one is definitely worth the trip! This Western Massachusetts fair has been around for 146 years, and it is no surprise. With an art show and sale, agricultural exhibits, and great eats, it will have you coming back year after year. The kids can take place in old fashioned games while older fair goers might enjoy the art demos. The Blandford Fair is truly a step into the past dressed up with a little bit of modern flair: a must go.

One Last Beach Trip
It’s hard to admit it, but summer is almost over. Use this unofficial end to the season as the perfect excuse to get one last beach trip in. Instead of waiting in traffic to get on the Cape, pick a more offbeat spot to soak in the last of summer’s rays. Crane’s Beach in Ipswich (seen here from the rooftops of the Crane Estate), Salisbury Beach in Salisbury and Wingaersheck Beach in Gloucester are all great options.
Pilgrim Hall Museum
History buffs and kids will enjoy this one! Take the family down to Plymouth to help the Pilgrim Hall Museum celebrate its 189th birthday! See real artifacts that came over on the Mayflower with the Pilgrims and spend the day meandering through a little bit of our nation’s history. Of course, birthday cake will be served and admission will be free to all!
75 Court St, Plymouth, MA
All-White Labor Day Party
Party the night away and say goodbye to summer in style. The kids will have to stay home for this one! Lux is hosting an All-White Virgo Affair Labor Day party at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Boston in which guests will wear all white, to make sure their summer clothes get one last wear in before becoming a fashion faux pas. This is a 21+ event.
Saturday, August 31, 2013 10pm-2am
Embassy Suites Hotel, 207 Porter Street, Boston
Tickets: $15 per person for group purchases, $20 for single ticket purchase

Use the rest of the weekend to scope out local breweries. New England favorites are Wachusett Brewery, Three Beards Brewing Company, Clown Shoes Beer and Wormtown Brewery.

There’s nothing better than spending a day on the water. This weekend, go to the Gloucester Schooner Festival to check out the boats and make a day of it! There will be schooners of all different sizes, both old and new, creating a spectacular sight for all who come. Gloucester is America’s oldest seaport, and this festival pays homage to it. On Sunday morning, there will be a “Parade of Sail” as visitors will be invited to watch the boats make it through the harbor and out into the open ocean. Another highlight is the first annual lobster bake from 4pm-7pm on Saturday!
