After a brief search, Worcester police arrested two 17-year-old boys and charged one of them with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
The other was arrested on an outstanding warrant not related to the incident.
The investigation is still active.
The Incident
On Monday, July 17, at approximately 5:11 p.m., two Worcester Police officers, on routine patrol, in a marked police cruiser, came upon a large group of people at the intersection of Endicott and Harding Streets. As the officers approached the group they saw two men running towards a Blue Honda RAV 4 and quickly drive away.
Upon arrival, officers discovered that a 16-year-old kid had just been stabbed. The victim was suffering from a serious stab wound to his lower back. The victim was bleeding heavily from his wound. One of the officers and a citizen rendered medical aid to the victim until the arrival of Worcester EMS.
The victim was treated at the scene and then transported to a nearby hospital. The injuries were severe enough that one of the officers had to drive the ambulance to the hospital while EMTs worked to stabilize the victim. Upon arrival to the hospital, the victim was immediately taken into emergency surgery. The victim was in critical condition when he arrived but is believed to have stabilized.
There were numerous witnesses to this incident. Police were told that there were 4 occupants inside the Honda, three men and a woman driver. Police were told that the car was parked in the area of the incident and the victim was arguing with one of the passengers in the Honda. During the argument a fight erupted and the victim was stabbed. The suspect got back into the Honda and it drove off just as the initial two officers began to arrive at the scene.
Officers broadcasted the suspect car description to all surrounding police units. A short time later the car was spotted on Vernon Street. The suspect car was eventually stopped when adequate backup arrived. The car was stopped on Dillon Street.
One of the occupants was identified by witnesses as the person who stabbed the victim. The suspect was identified as a 17-year-old Worcester resident. This man was placed under arrest and charged with Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon and Armed Assault with Intent to Murder. Another 17-year-old occupant was also placed under arrest on an outstanding warrant that is unrelated to this incident. Both men were transported to police headquarters for processing.
The other two occupants were not arrested but taken to headquarters for questioning.
The Honda was towed to police headquarters and secured while investigators obtained a search warrant in order to process the vehicle for evidence.
