17-Year-Old Steals Truck and Drags Owner on Wild Chase with Worcester Police

Monday, November 21, 2016

A 17-year-old steals a truck, drags its owners, and leads Worcester Police on a wild chase through the city. He was charged with 17 crimes.

Here is the crazy and dangerous events according to Worcester Police:

Worcester Police officer responded to an Eastern Avenue apartment for a report of an assault and battery. The officer was traveling on Catherine Street, approaching Hooper Street, when he observed a white Ford pick-up truck traveling on Hopper Street at a high rate of speed.

The officer saw that the Ford truck driving erratically and saw that a young male operating the truck with another male hanging outside the driver’s door by his arm.

According to Worcester Police "It appeared to the officer that the male had his arm wedged in the driver’s door window with the rest of his body hanging off the side of the truck. The victim was later identified as the owner of the truck."

The young man was "driving fast and erratic and nearly struck several parked vehicles."

The man hanging out of the truck's window -- that police learned later was the owner --  was nearly struck by the parked cars on several occasions. Eventually the man was able to free his arm from the moving truck and fell to the ground.

When the owner freed himself, he fell he was nearly struck by the moving truck. The young man driving the truck, then  put the truck in reverse and nearly struck the male again. At the same time the officer had exited his cruiser and ordered the driver to stop. The officer came close to being hit by the truck as well. The truck then sped off. The officer got back into his cruiser followed the truck. Other responding officers tended to the male victim.

The Worcester Police officer followed the truck through several city streets. The driver eventually stopped the truck on Eastern Avenue. The driver jumped out of the driver’s side window. The truck was left in gear. The driver ran off while the truck continued to roll away unmanned. The truck crashed into a fence causing damage to the truck and fence.

The officer ran after the driver. Officers now on scene chased the driver on foot through several back yards. The driver attempted to run into an apartment located on Hooper Street. Officers were able to apprehend him in the hallway. The driver was violently resisting arrest. Other officers arrived and the male was placed in handcuffs.

While officers escorted the driver to the street, he chest bumped one officer, yelled profanities at all the officers present, attempted to break free in order to flee, and kicked two officers. At this time the officers took the driver to the ground for their protection. After a few minutes the driver began to calm down.

The driver, a 17-year-old juvenile male, was charged with Using Without Authority, Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon, 2 Counts of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, Operating a MV so as to Endanger, Leaving the Scene of a Personal Injury Accident, Unlicensed Operation of a MV, Malicious and Wanton Destruction of Property, Vandalism, Resisting Arrest and 2 Counts of Assault and Battery on a Police Officer.

The victim, 45-years-old of Rutland, was treated at the scene and then transported to a nearby hospital. The initial condition was serious. The victim’s current status is unknown at this time.
