18-year-old Shot in Worcester is City’s Third Homicide This Year

Wednesday, May 13, 2015

Late Tuesday night, Worcester Police officers were called to Frederick Street for a report of an assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. What they found was an 18-year-old male who had been shot. The young man died on Wednesday at a hospital due to his injuries and, as a result, is the city's third homicide in 2015.

No arrests have been made yet in the shooting and WPD detectives are currently investigating. According to the WPD, the crime scene unit was able to recover ballistic evidence at the scene along with other physical evidence.

2015 Homicides On Same Pace as Last Year

Tuesday night's shooting is the second shooting homicide in 2015, and the city's third total this year. The other homicide this year was a stabbing in March that occurred only six days from the first shooting homicide.

At this time last year, the city had also racked up three homicides and ended 2014 with seven homicides - five of which were shootings.

City Council Moves Against Shooting Range and Gun Shop

On Tuesday evening, the members of the Worcester City Council were unanimously against allowing a gun range and shop to move into a location at 170 Prescott Street. The Council urged the zoning advisory board to carefully scrutinize the decision to allow the gun shop to move in.

“I’m not in favor of this,” said Councilor Morris Bergman. “Whatever we can do to keep guns away from the wrong users, including youth and those that aren’t licensed to carry guns, should be supported.” Bergman also hoped to get input from Worcester Police Chief Gary Gemme to give insight to the zoning board.

Councilor Rick Rushton pointed out to the Council that if the owners seeking the permit meet the thresholds for their special permit to open the shop, then in all likelihood they will be approved to open and granted the permits.

"We can't just say 'Because I don't like guns in the city, it must not happen,'" said Rushton. "There is a second amendment. You have to have some realistic and fact-based reasons why it should not be allowed to have a special permit."
