24-Year-Old Shot in Worcester is City’s 5th Homicide This Year

On Sunday night, around 11:15 PM Worcester police officers responded to a call at the intersection of Newbury and Chatham Street for a report of an assault with a dangerous weapon.

When the officers arrived, they discovered a 24-year-old male suffering from a gunshot wound in a grassy area next to an apartment complex on Newbury Street. The male was unconscious and in serious condition. He was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

This shooting is the fifth homicide in Worcester this year.

The name of the victim is being withheld until family has been notified.

According to the Worcester Police, detectives have been working around the clock working to determine what led up to the shooting.

The investigation is ongoing. Worcester Man Stable After Being Shot on Grand Street

On Saturday, January 3, 2015 at approximately 3:26 AM Worcester Police responded to a Shotspotter activation in the area of 149 Grand Street. Shotspotter, the new gun detection system, indicated that several rounds were fired. Several officers responded to the area and located a 35-year-old male suffering from a gunshot wound. The male was treated at the scene by Worcester EMS and then transported to U-Mass Medical Center (university campus).

Police at the scene observed a motor vehicle running with the driver’s door open. Police observed that this vehicle had several bullet holes in the side.

Worcester Police Investigators were called to the scene to process evidence and interview neighbors. Other detectives went to the hospital and interviewed the victim. The victim provided the detective with minimal information. The victim refused to provide a statement about the incident.

The victim is in stable condition with a non-life threatening injury.

Two Males Hurt in Shooting Incident on Ingleside Avenue

On Saturday, February 28, 2015 at approximately 4:30 PM, Worcester Police received a call from U-Mass Medical Center (university campus) that two males entered the emergency room suffering from gunshot wounds. The victims are 19 and 21 years old. Police were told that the males drove themselves to the hospital.

Police arrived at the emergency room and met with the victims. According to the victims, they were both sitting in the 21-year-old victim's motor vehicle on Ingleside Avenue. The vehicle was parked in the area of 24 Ingleside Avenue. The victims stated that a male approached the vehicle, opened the passenger side door and demanded their belongings. The victim immediately sped off and the suspect fired at the two as they drove off.

The suspect is described as a black male, early to mid 20s, approximately 5’10" to 6’0" tall, wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt and grey sweatpants.

Both men received non-life threatening injuries.

Police Investigate Shooting on Water Street

On Saturday, March 7, 2015 at approximately 1:45 AM, two Worcester Police officers working the Bar Impact detail were walking in the Water and Harrison Street area. At this time there were several hundred patrons clearing out of the numerous bars located in the area for closing time. The officers heard the gunshots ring out on Water Street. Numerous foot beat officers quickly converged in the area.

As police responded to the area they came upon a shooting victim who was in the process of entering a motor vehicle. The officers located the male in front of 96 Water Street.

Police at the scene called for Worcester EMS. The victim was transported to U-Mass Medical Center (university campus) with a gunshot wound to his hand. It also appeared that the victim had received a superficial stab wound to his upper body.

15 Year Old Male Shot at Quality Inn and Suites at 50 Oriol Drive

On Saturday, March 14, 2015 at approximately 3:53 AM, Worcester Police responded to 50 Oriol Drive, the Quality Inn and Suites, for a report of a male shot. Upon police arrival, they came upon a 15-year-old male victim. The victim was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds but was conscious and alert.

The victim was transported to U-Mass Medical Center (university campus) and is expected to survive.

Police Investigate Weekend Shooting on Cohasset Street

On Saturday, at approximately 4:30 PM Worcester Police responded to Saint Vincent Hospital for a report of a 23-year-old male victim suffering from a single gunshot wound. The victim's injuries were considered non-life threatening.

During the investigation, police learned that the incident occurred at the intersection of Cohasset Street and Dana Avenue. According to the victim, he was a passenger in a vehicle traveling onto Cohasset Street. Two males dressed in dark clothing were standing near the intersection and fired a shot at the vehicle. The bullet shattered the passenger side window and struck the victim in the hand.

There is limited suspect information at this time. Police continue to investigate.

Man Shot and Killed at After Hours Party on Narragansett Ave.

On Sunday, March 22, 2015 at approximately 5:00 AM, Worcester Police responded to 5 Narragansett Avenue for a report of an unknown problem involving a large party. Multiple police officers arrived at the scene and discovered the immediate area covered in empty beer bottles. Police received information that several gunshots were heard from within the apartment. Officers knocked on the door of the apartment but received no response. At the same time police received a call from a local hospital informing them that a 28-year-old female had just arrived after being been driven to the emergency room suffering from a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

Based on information provided to the officers at the scene along with the recent arrival of a gunshot victim to the hospital, the officers entered into the apartment through a door that was already partially ajar. Immediately upon entry they discovered a 27-year-old male deceased on the floor. The male had been shot. He was pronounced deceased by Worcester EMS personnel at 5:18 AM.

Couple Unhurt Sitting in MV as Shots Fired at Them

On Sunday, March 29, 2015 at approximately 5:05 PM, Worcester Police responded to the area of 507 Plantation Street for a report of shots fired. Upon the officers arrival they met with an 18-year-old male victim and a 19-year-old female victim.

According to the victims, they were sitting in their motor vehicle in the parking lot of 501 Plantation Street when a dark colored vehicle pulled in front of them. Inside the vehicle were six males. The male sitting in the passenger seat leaned out of the window and begin to fire several shots at the vehicle that they were sitting in. The two victims ducked down inside the car as the shots rang out. The two were unhurt.

After the shots were fired the dark colored vehicle sped off. The victims attempted to drive off but the vehicle became disabled as a result of the shooting.

Girls Boot Grazed as Shots Fired at Group of Youths

On Saturday, April 11, 2015 at approximately 2:32 AM, a Worcester police officer was in the area of Massasoit Road and Heywood Street when he noticed a small group of young people walking on Houghton Street. The officer decided to stay in the area to observe the groups actions. Moments later the officer heard several shots being fired. At the same time the City’s Shotspotter gun detection system was activated for shots fired in the area of 132 Houghton Street.

The officer arrived within seconds and observed two males running on Houghton Street and turn onto Kenberma Road. Several other officers arrived at the scene and discovered a group of youths hiding in the driveway of 132 Houghton Street. The officers encountered 11 individuals with one of them, a 16-year-old female, stating that she was shot in her boot. The girl had a bullet graze her boot but was not struck by the projectile. She was not injured. No other injuries reported.

Officers checked the area were the two males were seen running. The search located two 16-year-old males hiding in bushes. The two males were part of the group of youths seen on Houghton Street just prior to the shots fired.

One man arrested after ShotSpotter Activation on Aetna Street

On Sunday, April, 12, 2015 at approximately 2:40 AM Worcester police responded to a Shotspotter alert for two gun shots in the area of 50 Aetna Street. Upon arrival, officers saw two male suspects who started to run in between houses and through backyards. Officers followed the men to the vicinity of 19-21 Mott Street. Massachusetts State Police K-9 “Riggs” arrived on scene to assist with tracking the suspects. K-Riggs tracked to the backyard of 19 Mott Street and found a male matching the description of one of the suspects hiding behind some trash cans. The suspect immediately surrendered and was taken into custody. The owner of the property did not know the male who was later identified as 20-year-old Jerson Jacquez.

The Crime Scene Unit arrived on scene and recovered ballistic evidence along with physical evidence. A search of the area did not produce the weapon.

Police Continue to Investigate Shooting on Randolph Road

On Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at approximately 5:00 PM Worcester police were dispatched to Bayberry Road near Dodge Park for a report of a gunshot victim. Upon arrival, officers found an 18-year-old male of Worcester suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg. The victim was transported to a local hospital to be treated for a non-life threatening single gunshot wound.

A short time later, Worcester police were notified of a second male victim with a single gunshot wound at a local emergency room. The victim was later identified as a 19-year-old male of Worcester. The victim was dropped off at the hospital by his friends. According to the victim, he was shot in the vicinity of Dodge Park. His injuries are considered non-life threatening.

Shotspotter Activation Contributes with Quick Apprehension of Suspect

On Monday, April 27, 2015, at approximately 2:30 PM, Worcester Police Operations personnel responded to the area of 58 Cohasset Street for a Shotspotter gun detection alert. The system had detected one shot fired. The first arriving officer encountered a witness that informed him that a young male was just seen running from the area holding a gun. Several officers began to arrive at the scene when police dispatchers started receiving calls from several citizens concerned about hearing gunshots.

The first arriving officer began to search the immediate area for the suspect. Prior to driving off the witness provided a description of the suspect. A few moments later the officer observed a male fitting the description walking on Standish Street by Bedford Avenue. The officer observed the male repeatedly reaching towards his waistband and looking over his shoulder.

The suspect was still on Standish Street approaching Grafton Street when the officer approached the suspect in his marked cruiser. The officer stopped near the suspect and ordered him to show his hands. The male complied and was ordered to walk towards his cruiser. The suspect was ordered to place his hands on the hood of the cruiser. At this time another officer arrived to provide backup. The suspect, identified as Steven Price, 19-years-old of 39 Gibbs Street, Worcester, was searched for weapons. A 9 mm semi automatic handgun was located in the waistband of Mr. Price. The gun was loaded. The officer noticed that the serial numbers to this weapon had been filed off.

Police Recover Two Firearms while Investigating Reports of Gunfire, 5 Arrested

On Monday, April 27, 2015 at approximately 9:00 PM Worcester police responded to the area of 101 Canterbury Street for a report of gunshots.Officers were able to obtain video surveillance that showed a large fight involving weapons. Ballistic evidence was also recovered from the scene.

Officers traveling on Canterbury Street toward Gardner Street saw four males sprinting from the area. One of the males who was identified as 19-year-old Christian Martinez of Worcester was holding his waistband without releasing his grip. The males slowed down their pace when they reached Gardner Street. Officers observed the outline of a firearm in Mr. Martinez’s waistband. As officers approached the male, Mr. Martinez fled up Gardner Street toward Hollis Street. The three other males then followed him. One officer engaged in a foot pursuit while the other officer caught up with the males in the cruiser. The two officers were able to apprehend Mr. Martinez. Officer seized the firearm from Mr. Martinez. Mr. Martinez did not have a license to carry a firearm.

Man Treated for Minor Injuries after Being Shot on Everard Street

On Thursday, May 7, 2015 at approximately 7:30 PM, Worcester police responded to the area of Everard Street and Vinton Street for a report of shots fired. Officers arriving at the scene were notified that a local hospital emergency room had just received a 19-year-old shooting victim. The victim was taken to the hospital by a friend.

Officers arriving at the hospital met with the shooting victim. He was conscious and alert and suffering from a non-life threatening injury.

The victim stated that he was a passenger in a motor vehicle when three males stepped in front of the vehicle that he was in. According to the victim, the males began to throw rocks at the vehicle. At this time the victim exited the vehicle and was shot. The victim provided very little information with regard to the suspect’s description. After the shooting the victim was driven to the hospital.

Detectives Investigate Fatal Shooting on Frederick Street

On Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at approximately 10:20 PM Worcester police were called to Frederick Street for a report of an Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon. Upon arrival, officers located a 18-year-old male suffering from a single gunshot wound. The victim was unresponsive and rushed to a local hospital to be treated for his injuries. On Wednesday, May 13, 2015 detectives were notified that the victim had succumbed to his injuries.

WPD Investigators Working on Park View Shooting Incident

On Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at approximately 2:00 PM, members of the Worcester Police Department responded to Park View for a report of shots fired. Upon the officers arrival they met with witnesses. According to one witness, a white Honda was seen pulling into the driveway of a home on Park View. Two white males exited the Honda. One male was approximately 6’0” tall with an average build wearing a baseball hat and a white tee shirt, while the other male was approximately 5’8” tall with a heavy build wearing a dark colored hooded sweatshirt. Police were told that both males were not from the neighborhood.

At this time a third male drove up to the front of the house that the two males were at. The male was driving a white vehicle. The witness observed a black male exit the white vehicle. This male was approximately 5’8”, with a heavy build, wearing a red tee shirt.

The three men began to argue which quickly escalated into a physical altercation. During the altercation shots were fired. After the shots, the two vehicles sped off in opposite directions.

Victim is Stable while Police Investigate Daniels Street Shooting

On Friday, June 12, 2015 at approximately 4:00 PM, members of the Worcester Police Operations Traffic Enforcement Unit were conducting crosswalk enforcement in the area of 397 Shrewsbury Street. At this time the officers working the detail heard several gunshots coming from nearby Daniels Street. Moments later a vehicle drove up to an officer who was standing on Shrewsbury Street by Imperial Road. The officer was watching for crosswalk violators.

Two men in the vehicle informed the officer that they were just shot at while on Daniels Road. The men explained that they were being followed by a Black Nissan SUV as they traveled east on Belmont Street. The two men turned right onto Daniels Street and stopped. The Black SUV also turned onto Daniels Street and stopped behind the victim’s vehicle. The driver of the SUV exited his vehicle and was holding a gun. The victim observed this and began to drive away. The suspect fired several rounds into the victim’s vehicle.

The victim was the driver. The victim was struck in the arm. The vehicle was also hit as the driver’s side glass was shattered. The suspect SUV backed up Daniels Street and drove off on Belmont Street heading east towards Shrewsbury.

Male Suspect Breaking into MV Fires Gun at Owner as he Interrupts

On Saturday, June 13, 2015 at approximately 12:30 AM, Worcester Police responded to a Cutting Avenue address for a report of a person breaking into a motor vehicle. Upon the officers arrival they met with a 30-year-old male victim. According to the victim, he heard a noise coming from the front of his house, when he looked out he observed a male inside his motor vehicle. The suspect was described as a Hispanic male, thin build, wearing a light colored shirt, black backpack, and dark pants.

The victim approached the suspect and asked him what he was doing. The suspect exited the vehicle and began to run. The victim chased the suspect. As the suspect was running he turned and pointed a gun at the victim and fired several times. At the time, the victim believed that the suspect had a toy “cap gun.” The suspect eventually ran off. The victim went back to his vehicle and discovered that he was only missing some coins.

Worcester Man Shot while Driving MV on Harding St. by Harrison St.

On Friday, June 19, 2015 at approximately 12:30 AM, a Worcester Police officer was in the Kelley Square area when he heard multiple gunshots being fired from the area of Harding Street, the Canal District. The officer called out with this information to all surrounding police units and then immediately proceeded to the area. At this time the officer observed a gold colored Mercedes driving on Harding Street at a high rate of speed. The Mercedes entered the intersection of Harding and Madison Streets without yielding to the stop sign.

Due to the operator’s erratic driving behavior the officer believed that the Mercedes was involved in the shooting. The officer activated his emergency lights and signaled the Mercedes to stop. The operator refused to comply and accelerated. The vehicle was weaving in and out of traffic. The officer called out to other nearby police units that the operator was attempting to evade the traffic stop.

The officer observed that the operator had a gunshot wound to his arm. The officer called for an ambulance. Several Worcester Police officers and Massachusetts State Troopers arrived at the scene.

The operator/victim is a 21-year-old Worcester man. The victim is known to police as an active member to a local gang.

Man Shot Inside Hope Cemetery Becomes 4th Homicide of the Year

On Thursday, June 25, 2015 at approximately 3:30 PM, Worcester Police received a call from a man stating that he was transporting his friend to UMass Memorial Hospital because he had just been shot. The male was in his personal vehicle. Several police units responded to UMass Memorial and met with the caller. The vehicle that he drove was parked outside the emergency room. The male victim was in the backseat suffering from a serious gunshot wound.

The caller informed the officers that he was with the victim and another friend inside Hope Cemetery. The three men were there to visit the grave site of a deceased friend. While there, a vehicle drove by and a male from inside the vehicle fired upon the group. After the shots rang out the vehicle fled the scene.

Man in Fair Condition after Being Shot Saturday on Merrifield Street

On Saturday, June 27, 2015 at approximately 6:16 PM, Worcester Police responded to a Gage Street address for a gunshot call. Upon the officers arrival they quickly learned that shots were fired on nearby Merrifield Street. Officers went to Merrifield Street and located a crime scene. At the same time that the officers discovered the evidence, police dispatchers received a call from a nearby hospital stating that a 23-year-old male, suffering from a gunshot wound, had just walked into the emergency room seeking treatment.

Police officers responded to the hospital emergency room and were met by emergency personnel. The officers were escorted to the victim. The officers were able to speak with the victim prior to being transported to another medical facility within the city.

According to the victim, he was on Merrifield Street helping out a relative when a vehicle drove up beside him as he was walking near the street. A passenger exited the vehicle and approached the victim. The victim noticed that the male suspect was holding a firearm. The victim attempted to run from the male suspect but was shot. After the shot was fired the suspect got back into the vehicle and drove off.
