Massachusetts' leaders over the past 20 years has worked to remove the stigma of "Taxachusetts" which plagued the state in the 1980's and 1990's. But, one area in which Massachusett's tax burden is among the highest is the auto tax.
Today, the auto tax burden on Massachusetts residents is the 8th highest in America. For the most generic car - a Toyota Camry - the tax payer in Massachusetts pays $519 in taxes for the vehilcle.
For vehicle property tax rates, WalletHub examined data pertaining to cities and counties constituting at least 50 percent of a given state’s population and extrapolated this to the state level using weighted averages based on population size. For each state, we assumed all residents own the same vehicle: a 2016 Toyota Camry LE four-door sedan — 2015’s highest-selling car — valued at $23,070.

Since different states chose different time spans in which to accumulate their data (3-10 years), GoLocal standardized the tallies to a 3-year sum.
