New MA DOT Tool Allows Worcester and Central MA Residents to Report Potholes

Tuesday, August 09, 2016

Technology has now hit potholes in Worcester. A new digital dashboard from MA DOT will allow residents to report and track the repair of potholes.

The Pothole Repair Dashboard is designed to track "real-time" the progress of highway pothole repairs that fall within the Massachusetts Highway Division’s District 3. This tools is for state roads and doesn't include how the city of Worcester is doing or not doing in repairing city streets.

Central Massachusetts residents can report a pothole’s size, location and the date it was spotted. Since early January, over 2,500 potholes have been reported.

According to MA DOT:

Welcome to the MassDOT, District 3, Pothole Repair website. The purpose of this pilot program is to inform the residents of Central Massachusetts where MassDOT, District 3 personnel are filling and repairing potholes on state roads and highways. Along with the pothole locations, this map gives the pothole size, the number of potholes filled, the type of material used, and the total approximate cost. Using this data, MassDOT, District 3 can make better decisions regarding the use of resources in paving operations during the construction season.

Please note this website is only tracking potholes repairs for the Central Massachusetts (District 3) area. Also, this website does not allow the visitor to report a pothole on a MassDOT jurisdiction state road or highway. To report potholes (for any district across the State) please click on the following link: [email protected]. To view this information in an accessible format, visit the tabular data page.

Waze

New Approach - More Technology

This is not the only application of technology to serve drivers. MA DOT announced a data-sharing partnership with Waze, the real-time traffic navigation app, to provide motorists with real-time traffic conditions across Massachusetts.

Designed as a free, two-way data share of publicly available, crowd-sourced traffic information, the Connected Citizens Program promotes greater efficiency, deeper insights and safer roads for citizens of Massachusetts along with more than 70 other partners around the world.

Under the program, Waze provides MassDOT with real-time, anonymous, Waze-generated incident and motorist slow-down information. In exchange, MassDOT provides real-time government-reported construction, crash and road closure data to Waze.

The Waze map evolves with every driver and data point it receives providing users with information about potential traffic delays, advanced notice of major traffic events and promotes safety.

“With the addition of MassDOT in the Waze Connected Citizens Program, Waze and MassDOT are empowering Massachusetts drivers with real-time data on changing road conditions and closures directly from MassDOT," said Paige Fitzgerald, Waze Connected Citizens Program Manger. "Building on the success we have had partnering with the City of Boston and other Massachusetts municipalities, Waze is excited to extend this data exchange to MassDOT to further optimize local driving experiences statewide."

Since different states chose different time spans in which to accumulate their data (3-10 years), GoLocal standardized the tallies to a 3-year sum.
