UMass Returns to Normal Operations as Police Pursue Investigation into Assault
The University of Massachusetts Amherst campus returned to normal operations at 7:13 p.m. today, lifting a shelter in place order. UMass Police report the campus is safe, noting that two suspects involved in an armed assault on a student fled campus, and police are vigorously pursuing leads.
A handgun was shown but not fired during the incident, which occurred about 5:17 p.m. in Pierpont Hall on Fearing Street in the Southwest Residential Area. The assailants are not believed to be UMass students. The male victim suffered a laceration to the head and is being treated at Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton.
UMass Police said the assault is not believed to be random. Law enforcement agencies throughout the region are collaborating in the active investigation.
“Our officers responded promptly and our community responded well to the emergency communications that we shared in a timely manner throughout the incident,” said UMass Police Chief Tyrone Parham. “I want to thank everyone involved for their assistance and cooperation.”
Updates on the investigation will be provided as new information becomes available.
