Worcester Public Schools Dropout Rate Lowers, But Trails State Average

Friday, January 22, 2016

The dropout rate news for Worcester schools was for the most part very positive. With significant improvement, but some bad news when comparing to the rest of the Commonwealth.

The Worcester Public School (WPS) is trumpeting new data that reports that 81% of high school seniors who graduated in 2015 completed in four-years.  The numbers, according to WPS, are the best results the city’s schools have achieved since the Massachusetts Department of Education (DESE) started calculating in this structure.

But, Worcester rates also trailed the statewide average by about 6%.

DESE announced that the state's four-year graduation rate improved for the ninth consecutive year, with 87.3 percent of students who entered as ninth graders in 2011-12 – or who transferred into that same cohort at any time during high school – graduating within four years.

"I'm pleased to see higher graduation rates across the Commonwealth, which represent great progress for our communities and education system," said Governor Charlie Baker. "Our administration is focused on offering a quality education to every student regardless of their ZIP code and will keep offering students strong opportunities after high school in postsecondary education and the workforce."

For urban schools across the state the numbers showed improvement according to DESE, but also note these districts are among the worse performing for quality.  PLEASE READ MA Top High Schools.

Over the past five years (between 2009-10 and 2014-15), the urban school districts that have made the largest gains in reducing the number of dropouts included:

Urban School Results

Boston, which had 430 fewer students drop out in 2014-15 than in 2009-10, a 36 percent change;

Springfield, which had 382 fewer students drop out in 2014-15 than in 2009-10, a 51.8 percent change;

Lawrence, which had 150 fewer students drop out in 2014-15 than in 2009-10, a 48.2 percent change;

New Bedford, which had 146 fewer students drop out in 2014-15 than in 2009-10, a 61.6 percent change; and

Worcester, which had 136 fewer students drop out in 2014-15 than in 2009-10, a 52.9 percent change.

"These impressive results reflect the dedication of the Commonwealth's educators, counselors and administrators to keeping all students engaged in school," said Elementary and Secondary Education Commissioner Mitchell D. Chester. "A high school diploma is a necessary, although increasingly insufficient, credential that our students need as they move on to life after high school. Our work now is to ensure that the high school diploma represents readiness for college, a career and participation in civic life."

Worcester Numbers:

It is the seventh consecutive year that the four-year graduation rate of high school students in the WPS has increased and represents a 13.6 percentage point increase from 2006 when the rate was 67.2 percent. The 13.6 percentage point increase compares to a 7.4 percentage point increase statewide over the same period of time.

According to WPS data:

Since last year, the four-year rates improved at Burncoat High School (increase of 6 percentage points to 81), Doherty High School (increase of 0.2 percentage points to 82.7), North High School (increase of 6.6 percentage points to 77.6), South High School (increase of 2.7 percentage points to 73.9) and Worcester Technical High School (increase of 1.7 percentage points to 98.5).

All of the schools for which the state calculated four-year graduation rates in 20061 have higher rates in 2014, including Burncoat High School (increase of 17.3 percentage points), Doherty Memorial High School (increase of 10.6 percentage points), North High School (increase of 10.6 percentage points), South High School (increase of 10.5 percentage points), University Park Campus School (increase of 5.7 percentage points) and Worcester Technical High School (increase of 19.2 percentage points).
