Be Like Brit Partners Raise $5000

Tuesday, June 12, 2012

Britney's parents Len (second from left) and Cherylann Gengel (center) with representatives from Bay State Savings Bank and Spencer Furniture.

Thanks to a joint promotion of Bay State Savings Bank, Spencer Furniture, Palley Advertising and WXLO, the Be Like Brit Foundation has raised more than $5000 for furnishings of the orphanage under construction in Haiti.

Brit's Orphanage will open early next year and is named in honor of Britney Gengel, who tragically lost her life in the January 2010 earthquake while on a mission to serve the children of Haiti.

Be Like Brit, which was established by Britney's parents Len and Cherylann Gengel following her death, is in the process of constructing an orphanage in Grand Goave, Haiti, which will become home to 66 children.

Brit's Orphanage currently under construction in Haiti.

Funds for mattresses and other furnishings were raised through donations at Spencer Furniture and Bay State Savings Bank. Spencer Furniture, who donated a portion of their mattress sales during the month of May to Be Like Brit, raffled off a Red Sox recliner. Bay State Savings matched all donations made at their branches, entered donors into a drawing for an iPad and donated $1 for every new "Like" on its Facebook page.

Diane Giampa, senior vice president of marketing for the bank, said that Bay State Savings has been involved with Be Like Brit for more than a year. "We just fell in love with the whole idea," Giampa said. "We've supported their golf tournament, and their fashion show back in April.

"The Gengels have turned something so horrific into something that is doing so much good for so many people. They're creating jobs, there's the orphanage, and there will be an education piece as well," GIampa said.
