Best and Worst Nursing Homes in Worcester - Federal Study

Monday, August 13, 2012

The quality of nursing homes in Worcester range significantly, according to a new study issued by Medicare.gov. The 17 Worcester-based nursing homes were scored across four measures and were issued an overall score by the federal study.

The report provides guidelines to families on how best to select the highest quality nursing home with the right resources for their family member.

Please see the related article - The Rankings of Worcester Nursing Homes.

“These enhanced tools give patients, their families, and caregivers the ability to make an informed decision on where to seek care by looking at how well hospitals and nursing homes are performing on important quality measures, and” said Acting CMS Administrator Marilyn Tavenner.

Top Performers

According to the federal report among the top performers is Knollwood Nursing Center on Briarwood Circle. Knollwood scored a Five-Star rating in the federal report. The Knollwood facility, “has nursing units specifically dedicated to short-term, sub-acute care and long-term care in recognition of the specific needs of each population.”

Also scoring a Five-Star rating is Jewish Healthcare Services on Salisbury Street – founded in 1914, it has one of the widest ranges of services. The facility offers “post-hospital rehabilitation, home care services, as well as long-term care, Alzheimer programs, hospice and more, in a dignified and comfortable setting for our residents.”

The third Five-Star facility is Notre Dame Long Term Care on Plantation Street.

Worcester’s Overall Quality Versus Average MA Nursing Home

The 17 Worcester-based facilities scored an average score of 3.0 Stars – an average ranking. There are 424 rated nursing homes in Massachusetts and the average score across the Commonwealth is 3.429.

During the week, GoLocalWorcester will unveil these comprehensive rankings and report on the scores of the nursing homes in Central Massachusetts.

Low Performers

Two facilities scored just a One-Star overall ranking which is considered as “much below average ranking.”

The two nursing homes scoring just One-Star are the Golden Living Center – the Hermitage located on Mill Street and Saint Francis Rehabilitation and Nursing Center located on Plantation Street.

The Golden Living Center facility is owned by a Plano, Texas company that owns 18 other nursing home/healthcare facilities across Massachusetts. According to Golden Living, over 40 of their facilities across the country earned Five-Star rankings, including four other Massachusetts facilities: Chetwynde (West Newton), GLC – West Newton, GLC – Plymouth, and GLC – Dexter House.

Saint Francis is operated by Landmark Management Solution of Haverhill, Massachusetts. The firm also operates three other nursing homes in Massachusetts: Neville Center in Cambridge, the Pavilion in Hyannis, and St. Joseph Nursing Care Center in Dorchester.

Rights of Residents

Nursing home residents have certain rights and protections under the law. The nursing home must list and give all new residents a copy of these rights.

These resident rights include, but are not limited to:

• The right to be treated with dignity and respect.

• The right to be informed in writing about services and fees before you enter the nursing home.

• The right to manage your own money or to choose someone else you trust to do this for you.

• The right to privacy, and to keep and use your personal belongings and property as long as it doesn't interfere with the rights, health, or safety of others.

• The right to be informed about your medical condition, medications, and to see your own doctor. You also have the right to refuse medications and treatments.

• The right to have a choice over your schedule (for example, when you get up and go to sleep), your activities and other preferences that are important to you.

• The right to an environment more like a home that maximizes your comfort and provides you with assistance to be as independent as possible.
