Breaking: Direct Air Cancels Flights til May

Tuesday, March 13, 2012

After canceling several flights yesterday and today. Worcester's only commercial airline has suspended operation until the middle of May. On their website the company has issued the following state:

Direct Air finds it necessary to suspend flight operation from Tuesday, March 13, 2012 until May 15, 2012. This decision was made to address operational matters. We are currently evaluating strategic alternatives for Direct Air.

Direct Air is committed to our passengers, employees, and the communities we serve.

Please check back here for more details.

Very Truly Yours,
Direct Air

Massport has been monitoring the situation with Direct Air closely. Richard Walsh, Massport spokesman said, "In the three plus years they have operated at Worcester Regional Airport, the carrier has seen consistent growth with Worcester being one of its most popular markets with passenger load factors of 80 percent in 2011 which is a clear indicator that Worcester is a viable market."

Massport is the state agency that runs Worcester Airport.

GoLocalWorcester reported last night that several flights were cancel without explanation, fueling rumors that the airline might be in trouble.

Worcester's mayor has also reached out to Direct Air for answers.
