Can a Biden-Warren Ticket Win in Massachusetts?
Wednesday, August 26, 2015
Even with the prospect of sharing a ticket with Senator Warren, can Biden defeat front-runner Hillary Clinton in the Massachusetts primary?
“I definitely think that Biden-Warren could beat Hillary in the Democratic primary in Massachusetts,” Holy Cross political science professor Dr. David Schaefer told GoLocal.
Many reports indicate that Biden met with Warren only to gain support from the Senator if Biden decides to make a late run for president. Support from Warren could mean two things for Biden: Take away votes from Clinton and to generate support from the progressive followers that were originally hoping Warren would make a run for president.
Candidates Have Their Share of Scandals
Schaefer notes that Clinton’s recent run of scandals, including the on-going email problem, has cast doubt in voters’ minds nationwide.
However, Schaefer quickly points out that Biden and Warren have had their own share of scandals and embarrassments.
“Biden is a far from perfect candidate,” said Schaefer. “He has a history that includes an embarrassing series of public plagiarisms. starting with his supposedly autobiographical 1988 Presidential campaign speech that was copied from British Labor Party labor Neil Kinnock.”
Even with Biden’s “gaffes”, Schaefer told GoLocal that they still don’t come close to comparing with Clinton’s problems.
“Warren made herself something of a laughingstock by claiming 'native American' ancestry as the Harvard Law School director, and then denying having done so, she too, is not on record as having done anything like raising millions from foreign investors apparently aimed at bending US policy to their favor while she held high office, as Ms. Clinton has done through her "foundation,” said Schaefer.
“There are no real policy issues between Clinton and Biden/Warren. But the character issues have placed Clinton's prospects in doubt, nowhere more so than in MA against Biden/ Warren. There is of course the geographic connection with Warren being our own senator. And it goes without saying that if Biden-Warren won the nomination they would win this state's electoral votes in the election,” added Schaefer.
