Central MA College Standout: Holden’s Ambrey Rice

Tuesday, March 11, 2014

BC freshman Ambrey Rice is wasting no time getting involved in school.

Ambrey Rice is already making her mark as a freshman at Boston College. The driven young Holden native is currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Communications and French at Boston College, and aspiring to a future career in the field of Communications/Media, Public Relations, Advertising, and/or Marketing.

A Conversation with Ambrey Rice

SW: Where do you see yourself when you graduate?

AR: I’m hoping to have a career somewhere in the field of Marketing, Advertising, or Public Relations—I suppose I will figure out specifically what I want to do at some point along the way.

SW: What made you choose your school?

AR: I fell in love with BC’s beautiful architecture the moment I set foot on the campus, so that was definitely a large factor. I also love its proximity to downtown Boston, and of course, the top-notch education. BC is the perfect combination of everything I was looking for in a school.

SW: What has been your most memorable course or professor?

AR: So far, I would have to say my Rhetorical Tradition class last semester, one of the requirements for the Communications major. While many of my peers were questioning whether or not they had chosen the right major, this class made me certain that I had because I loved the subject.

SW: What leadership roles have you taken on campus?

AR: I’m one of seven freshman editorial assistants for The Gavel, a student publication on campus. I applied for the position at the beginning of first semester, and I’ve loved being a part of the editorial board since then. I am specifically assigned to the Features section, where I help the section head and associates pitch ideas to staff writers and write/edit articles. It’s been a great way for me to become immersed in the editorial process early in my college career, and I’ve met some of my best friends in the process. I also work as a referee for the Intramural Volleyball program on campus.

SW: What is one thing you have learned about yourself since becoming a college student?

AR: I’ve learned that when faced with a challenge, I’m capable of doing more than I think—I often surprise myself.

SW: Where do you go and what do you do when you leave campus?

AR: When I’m pinched for time, I go to Cleveland Circle to grab Starbucks or Chipotle. Otherwise, I love going downtown for shopping and brunch on Newbury Street.

SW: What is your favorite quote?

AR: “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” –Eleanor Roosevelt

SW: What is your favorite book or movie?

AR: My favorite movie is Breakfast at Tiffany’s. It’s one of those classics that will never get old.

SW: What or who has had the greatest influence on you to date? Why?

AR: My parents. If they had not taught me the value of hard work, I would definitely not be where I am today.

SW: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

AR: In grad school or the workforce—maybe both!
