Central MA College Standout: Holy Cross’s Emily Sullivan

Tuesday, November 12, 2013

Holy Cross student Emily Sullivan is a natural leader and an advocate for environmental awareness.

GoLocalWorcester presents Central MA College Standout, a weekly feature that profiles college and university students in Central MA. Join us every Tuesday for a look at the careers and lifestyles of today’s local college student.

Arlington resident Emily Sullivan is a standout in academics, athletics, and environmental issues. Sullivan majors in Environmental Studies and Chinese at the College of the Holy Cross. She has taken leadership roles throughout her college career including captain of Varsity Women’s Ice Hockey, director of environmental concerns for SGA, co-chair of Oxfam, program coordinator for Eco-action (Holy Cross’s environmental group) and the Holy Cross Leadership Academy (Holy Cross’s student-athlete leadership development organization).

A Conversation with Emily Sullivan

SW: How would you describe yourself in a few lines?

ES: I would describe myself as an upbeat and optimistic person who enjoys trying new things and meeting new people.

SW: How have you taken a leadership role in school?

ES: I have taken leadership roles through my participation in athletics, student government, and other student organizations. I lead student initiatives on campus, such as the installation of 17 new hydration stations at Holy Cross and the development of a sustainability guide for Holy Cross. I also lead a group of student environmentalists and support them with projects and events. On top of that, I lead the women’s ice hockey team, along with my other two co-captains.

SW: Describe the career and/or future you envision for yourself.

ES: I envision myself working in the international urban development field. I am interested in the sustainable development of Asia, and would like to work internationally there. Eventually, I would also like to become a professor of international urban planning.

SW: Describe a stereotype of students that you have found to be untrue.

ES? Athletes are academically lazy and were only accepted into Holy Cross because of their athletic talents.

SW: What’s your favorite place to go to on campus? In Worcester?

ES: My favorite place on campus is the Hogan Student Center because you always bump into someone you know. My favorite place in Worcester is WooBerry because I love their frozen yogurt and enjoy supporting local, environmentally-conscious stores.

SW: What is your favorite book? Favorite social media site?

ES: My favorite book is The Raw Shark Texts and my favorite social media site is Reddit.

SW: What is your favorite quote?

ES: “Life is good.”

SW: What piece of technology, can you not live without?

ES: Definitely headphones!

SW: What or who has had the greatest influence on you to date? Why?

ES: My parents. My dad’s work ethic is phenomenal and he has taught me the importance of reliability and professionalism. My mom is such a positive woman and always reminds me that you need to be happy with and confident in yourself.

SW: What would someone be surprised to learn about you?

ES: I am an identical twin.

SW: How do you rate Worcester as a college city?

ES: Worcester always surprises me as a great college city. There are so many great restaurants and parks to explore. I would rate Worcester a 7 out of 10.

SW: If you could do just one thing, locally, nationally or globally to make a difference, what would it be?

ES: I want to remediate urban environmental issues through sustainable development and technologies.
