Nichols junior Patrick Hoey is a legacy student following in the footsteps of his father to become a successful businessman.
Patrick Hoey of Auburn is a marketing major at
Nichols College. In his junior year, Hoey has already become a student standout who is following in his father’s footsteps as a legacy student and future business leader. His on-campus activities include Student Government Association President, Marketing Club, Ambassador, Admissions Tele-Counselor, Campus Activities Board, orientation leader and Flag Football.
SW: Describe the career and/or future you envision for yourself.
PH: I can see myself doing many different careers after graduation. I could see myself working in a big marketing firm. I could also see myself running my own business, or perhaps doing something politically. Whatever I decide to do, I want to help people and create new opportunities for people. My overall career goal is to be the CEO of a company.
SW: What made you choose your school?
PH: I chose Nichols College for many different reasons. One of those reasons was their job placement rate after graduation, as well as the many different types of jobs the graduates were getting. I also chose the school because of the small classroom sizes, enabling personal connections with the different professors. Another reason is because I am a legacy student and I have seen not only my father, but also other business owners that have graduated from Nichols College become successful. Most importantly, I knew I could get involved fast and easily. The school is very unique in that they allow students in their freshman year to make a difference to the school.
SW: What was your most memorable course or professor?
PH: My most memorable class was Principles of Marketing. It just happened to be the same class one of my favorite professors taught. Len Harmon made me fall in love with marketing and that is why my major is marketing today. I loved everything from the homework to the projects in that class!
SW: What leadership roles have you taken on campus?
PH: I am the Student Government Association President, Ambassador, and Orientation Leader.
SW: How have you been involved in the community?
PH: Throughout the years I have been involved in many different ways, from the times I was an Eagle Scout and alter boy to now doing community service days through the school.
SW: What are you passionate about?
PH: Helping others and leaving my legacy where ever I go.
SW: What is one thing you have learned about yourself since becoming a college student?
PH: I have learned that I can be not only a good leader but might even be a great one. I have also learned that I can be a good role model for others.
SW: Where do you go and what do you do when you leave campus?
PH: I spend a lot of my time on campus, but when I leave, I go home and hang out with friends. I like to go to sporting events or spend time at the Boynton.
SW: What is your favorite quote?
PH: “Life is like riding a bike. It is impossible to maintain your balance while standing still.” –Linda Brakeall. I really like this quote because you can’t just expect things to get done. You have to decide to go out and make it happen.
SW: What is your favorite book or movie?
PH: My favorite movie has to be Rudy because I love the underdog story and my favorite division one college for sports is the University of Notre Dame.
SW: What or who has had the greatest influence on you to date? Why?
PH: I would say my parents and extended family have been my greatest influence in my life. My father runs a business he built himself and my mother was a stay-at-home mom who made me into the person I am today. My father was also my coach in many different sports growing up.
SW: What would someone be surprised to learn about you?
PH: I think people would be surprised to hear that I have pins in both of my hips.
SW: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
PH: In five years I see myself in a full time job living in Worcester or Auburn. I hopefully will be in the position to help better the community through Boy Scouts or something politically.
SW: If you could do just one thing—locally, nationally, or globally—to make a difference, what would it be?
PH: I would want to make it so people could afford to go to college and gain an education. I hate seeing friends of mine leaving Nichols, year after year, because of financial issues. Interest rates are so high that students may not be able to pay off their student loans in their lifetime.
